Leave the house with a watch? Or a ring??? Are you crazy!? You can't even bring your clothes. In Santo Domingo everyone walks around in their underwear cause they're afraid to get robbed. Except for those deported lunatic convicts who patrol the streets with crazy gang outfits and tons of guns. If you as much as look at them, they will kill you. And eat you. dont go!

Joke

Sorry I'm just joking. I think you'll be fine. Others can hopefully tell you more about the statistics though, if it concerns you.

But serious: I have been in situations in London, NY, Berlin, Amsterdam and many places more that could have happend anywere. Personally I dont concider the DR more dangerous then any place I have been to so far.

Crime wave 101

You've got it all wrong. The crime wave is simple. Place your left hand behind your back, thumb gripped. Using your right hand, concealing your thumb, wave over your head in a side-to-side motion. The classic "Crime Wave" requires one to stand on one foot, left for a misdemeanor, right for felonies.

Other than the above information, I've seen no crime or police action in the year I've lived in Santo Domingo. Actually, I'd say it's the safest place I've ever lived. That's based upon how safe I feel and my lack of bad experiences. I am from Miami and lived in quite a few other places in the US and Central America.

Come on down, you'll be fine.

You should be fine as long as you're not stomping grounds in the streets with gold chains hanging out your shirt or clearly visible to dynamic-duo motoconcho bandits who might get their mouths watery if it happens that they see you marketing your gold in flagrant ways. I was just there last month but didn't bring the gold chains to avoid "inconveniences" since I was maneuvering on foot and public transport most of the time in SD.

Crime rate

I basically agree with this and other comments commenting that SD is as safe as any other place .The only remark I would like to add is that reading the "Listing Diario" en el "Nacional " you notice that crime rate has seriously increased in SD over the last year . There are specific "barrios" in the capital which are becoming dangerous ... The problem of drugs and dealing seems to become a serious problem as you probably all know .The government is apparently /?)going to take some special measures against these gangs who operate in rather restricted areas and are often known by the police .- But corruption is big and that's part of the problem Still believe that in general it's like all over this world ..avoid these areas , don't make yourself too visible as you would do in any city and you are as safe as anywhere else..

I have had no problem walking the streets of SD in the 5 months I've been here. It's all about attitude. I don't wear a watch or jewelry, and I don't dress like a tourist, i.e. shorts, sandals, camera around next. Have 2 friends who have had their batteries and inverters stolen, none violently, and have heard about home breakins, so we ended up in an apartment, with a watchman and gates, think it's probably safer that way. Housing prices are climbing, the time to buy is now, just like anywhere else. The only evidence i've seen of crime is a couple of arrests in the barrio, when out of nowhere about a dozen plainclothes cops pull out guns and quickly drive a couple of dudes away in their pickup truck.

NO. PEOPLE ARE MULTIPLYING HERE RAPIDLY. THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF HOMES AND THE MONEY TO BUY THEM. NOT SURE WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE PRICES.

It's called a "Caps Lock" button, please use it!

You said it, most, but not all.

We have the complete spectrum here, super rich, the very poor and everything else in between. In Santo Domingo we have large middle class areas, some high end areas and plenty of low end areas. Just like 95% of the cities around the globe, SD is no different. This can also be said of Santiago and the larger towns like Puerto Plata.

If you drive around certain parts of Santo Domingo, you will notice it has a very high luxury car per capita rate. Yes, we have lots of wealthy and "I'm doing ok thank you very much" Dominicans here in SD.

Remember, this is not a little Caribbean island living off coconuts, it's a country with 10 million + people (unofficial number). 3-4 million of them living in SD.

What crime wave?

As a tourist, I have never witnessed any real crime. Just lowlife pickpockets and scam artists. If you are so worried about being a victum of crime, you should not live in any major city anywhere. I was in Atlantic City NJ for two nights last week and won over $900.00 USD playing poker in a casino. The electronic safe in my room didn't work so I was walking around at night with over $1,200 USD in my pocket and Atlantic City is not a nice place at night. I didn't care. I didn't give it a second thought. If you are anywhere and are parinoid about being robbed, carry a can of mace. If someone approaches you, mace the bastard.

This advise is the best. Crooks are like predators and can smell your fear. Walk with your head up and don't look like prey. I've never been robbed here, but I've seen a few people who definately were thinking about it.

They have been scared away by people who type in all CAPS .

Note they earn pesos not pasos and not 50,000 a month, more like 5,000. If that.

My New Years Resolution is to learn how to type correctly. Right now it's just easier to get the words out. I mean no harm by using all capital letters, plus my vision isn't the best it can be. Mavis Beacon typing cd is on my to do list for saturday. Now back to my questions. Has the new government taken the bull by the horns or visa versa? Thanks for the observations. Time to walk the snow blower......see ya later :cross-eye
