From what I've read on this board, you've gotta be a resident, it's a process that has to be repeated every year, and it's getting harder to do, some posters are into it. Don't be too paranoid, it's not something you really need to get involved with.

Hi all: is it legal to carry a handgun for personal protection/self-defense or to have them at home? Is it advisable?

Michael

Are you really that concerned that makes you wanna inquire about gun permits for personal protection?. Who needs to carry a gun while on vacation. Go to Afghanistan, they will give you a gun permitand guns on the spot. Good luck.

Saw this wise advice on another thread

that dealt with weapons in the DR:

SPRAY AND PRAY!

AS for the other quote, "Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6." is not VALID in the DR. There are no juries....

You need to be a resident to legally carry or own a firearm. As far as keeping it in your home, the same rules apply. If you are a sane person, and don't put yourself into problem situations, then the police would never have a reason to search your home. If you had to use the firearm one day to defend yourself in your home, then being judged by 1 person rather than buried by 6 is good. Carrying a firearm outside is a little more risky as sometimes one can be searched because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time. My attorney has told me that the penalty for carrying a firearm illegally is 5 years in jail, no questions asked.

My opinion is that a firearm in the home is not a bad idea in this country. At the same time I do not feel carrying a firearm on the streets here is necessary or advisable.

Stallion, don't be a goddamn smartass. You obviously don't know anything about me so you're cordially invited to take a hike.

RSVP not necessary.

Everyone other than Stallion, thanks. I'd never carry illegally; was only thinking about protecting my home with a good shotgun and carrying a small piece if worst comes to worst on the streets.

As far as spray spray is concerned, I'm not sure how effective that would be with multiple assailants or following a surprise attack. In the latter case firing a warning shot might make the mugger think twice before continuing to run away with the spoils.

I'd never shoot at anyone unless I was fearing for my life. But I also sure as hell don't want some peep squeak rob me and get away with it. It's only as a last resort; that's why I asked.

Well Mike, as has been posted before

It is a long and costly process.

The advice you have received is pretty straight forward.

Since it is your time and a lot of your money, do what you have to.

Firing warning shots is the worst thing you can do in any gunfight or robbery. First of all, you're wasting ammunition. Secondly, it will definately land you in jail. Thirdly, what goes up will come down; you may kill an innocent bystander.

Pepper spray, preferably OC 5%, will bring anyone to their knees in seconds. You should look for OC 5% in a bottle that sprays a stream, not a mist. The stream will give you better aim and reduce the chance of the wind blowing it back at you. The other benefit of pepper spray is that you can leave the scene and not have to worry about being arrested. If the bad guy goes to the PD and says that a person sprayed him with pepper spray the first question the police will ask is "WHY?" Since the spray doesn't leave any marks or injuries there really is no evidence that you did in fact spray the person. If you're a real nice guy, ask the bad guy if he has asthma, as there have been rare cases of being with asthma dying after being sprayed.

My favorite weopon is a weighted flashlight. It makes for a great impact weopon, provides light (handy in this town), and what cop would arrest you for having a flashlight. You can carry it anywhere, including casinos, bars, and even travel with it. Check out galls.com and you will find weights that screw onto the bottom of AA mag-lights. It ads 5 lbs to the light and only 2".

I also recommend reading any of Masaad Ayoob's books. I have been a student of his since 1990 and his training has helped me survive many nasty situations without injuring myself or anyone else.

Enjoy!

I could see you were always picked on all the time, or perhaps mugged too many times. Or did not make it to the police force. Get a bodyguard, leave the guns to the proffesionals dude.
