Does anyone have details about the police busting over 150 girls on the strip in Boca Chica and shaking down some tourist. Even going in to some hotels to arrest some chicas.

This happens periodiacally, they extort what money and sexual favors they can and a few days later they are all back.

I think this may be a little different. I hear most of the bars were closed as well.

the disco club (cosmos) and zanzibar are closed down but nothing to do with prostitution. i've heard one of the owners wasn't making the payments to the bank.

Even when that happened before, it didn't last long or amount to a hill of beans.

Five businesses in Boca Chica shut down

The Attorney General of the Dominican Republic closed five places of entertainment along Duarte Street in Boca Chica, where besides the owners, 50 girls in the company of foreigners, some of whom were in the country illegally.

The action,by the Attorney General, according to the Hoy newspaper, was taken againsthe businesses located in the so-called "Sodom and Gomorrah" area of Boca Chica. The following businesses were closed: El Gibi, Dominican Suisa, Ruta 66 and the La Criolla restaurant."Promoting Tourist Prostitution" was the alleged reason for the closures. <arkus Kuttel, George Burhkardt, Hans Peter Kurt Schwagertt were arrested along with Yanet Kuttel and Nadine Van Burg, both Swiss citizens.

The operation was headed by the assistant AG Frank Sosa in answer to complaints from residents of Boca Chica regarding the scandalous activities going on at the locations at all hours of the day and night, as well as the prostitution.

The AG press notice also said that the two Swiss women were taken for investigation since they were in the country illegally, one working as a waitress, and the other as a cashier. They worked at a place managed by Manuela Medina Tejada.

damn!!! i loved ruta 66! (it was called something else last year when i was there...i have promised to bring DJ flaco some really progressive house music). I never saw many sankies or sankettes there tho...a couple here and there (go figure). Most were by that horrible disco cosmos.

II am concerned with so MANY of the bars being closed. Hell...there aint a heck of a lot to do in BC....i just always enjoyed watching the whole scene from afar....and playing pool with flacko and juan (the mute guy)

hopefully it will all be restored back to somewhat of its cheesy self.....c'mon...a SANITIZED boca chica....why bother?.....the beach is ok and the guys are great...and if you know where to got the food aint bad either.

with that said....a great place for budget minded vacationers with some boom boom on their mind

HB, these aren't my hangouts though we would eat at the Swiss place a fair bit before the prices went up 300% as it is a restaurant not really a bar at all, and I am surprised to read they were closed as a result. The bars are not my cup of tea, or hanging out on Duarte at all at night. That said they did this last year, Gibis was Madhouse, under it's old name, same owners, and after the PanAm games they all reopened. As they will again.

With the peso going up and the prices not going down I haven't been in the DR since Labour day and have no plans to visit until things make sense there.

"jrzyguy",

Sounds like this would be a good time for you to spread your wings and fly! Grab a cab and check out places in Jaun Dolio, San Pedro or Santo Domingo.
A great place for your tastes would be the Chocolate Bar in Jaun Dolio. A couple of other places are Guilla's Cafe on Monday nights when they have a band and Oasis Bar. I can't really help you too much with suggestions for SD or SPD because places come and go and I am out of the swing of things there for a while.
I would not worry too much about Boca Chica being too quiet because these busts and closings have happened many many times over the years and they are up and running after things blow over. By the time you get there things should be hopping again.

For having fun and/or not getting mugged I would advise an average tourist to skip both Juan Dolio (boring) and San Pedro ( not so safe for Gringos) - the capital is an option anyway if you are south.

So Boca is shut down, big deal. Santo Domingo is within striking distance. Enjoy the beach in the day and move around a bit in the evening.

As far as Trinidad is concerned I dont think that there is any comparison, beach or "entertainment" wise.

In fact where do you think some of the "entertainment" in Trinidad comes from.

Good point willie. I agree with what you saying about enjoying the beach at boca chica and spending the evening at the capital. The government is trying to make boca chica a touristy place for families i guess.

its more my friends that i am worried about. i am just cool sitting my growing butt on the beach. My best friend is only going for a few days.....and most likely will be looking for a sank.

Myself....i just wonder about duarte. can this crackdown be good for the tourist trade??

This does smell of a money grab,as I believe all of the businesses mentioned are swiss/foreign owned, and the bars closed were certainly not puta central, as a matter of fact they were the few bars you could go into to get AWAY from the street rats. Quite interesting indeed.
