I know this has been asked before, I did do a search but the last time the subject has come up it was 2003.

Have the roads improved at all? Is it possible with a car based SUV?

Or should I just do the Nagua - San Fran - Autopista route?

Thanks in advance.

I also see that the car ferry is still not operational in Samana, please correct me if I am wrong.

To go San Francisco-Nagua-Samana means you have to drive four hours from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo, and then another four hours to get to Samana.

Have not heard of a car ferry to Samana from Sabana de la Mar. And don't hear anyone recomending the land route, so forget it unless you are in for a hardship trip.

Well our home base is Santiago, as for flying we bring our own plane too! My friend & I fly down in a Cessna. Our novias are in Santiago and this trip we want to see Carnival (2nd time for me) and then head to Samana to see the whales. Since we have never been to Punta Cana I wanted to know if I could drive southeast to get there.

I just recently started driving in the DR but have racked up 2600 miles in 3 trips (24 days). I do love driving in the DR!

We might pass on Punta Cana and pick somewhere else new after Samana.
