Just a reminder that all numbers dialled within the DR have to be preceded by the 809 dialling code as from today.

Now you can get RSI from phones too.

Why can't they just have area codes for each province or region? I just can't understand it. :ermm:

How does this scheme work? I am particularly interested in the Santiago telephone numbers.

It was reported in DR1 news a week or two ago. All domestic numbers have to be preceded by 809, and all cellphone nos by 809-1.

to dial a home number 809 XXX XXXX
to dial a cell number 809 1 XXX XXXX

Chiri, I don't recall seeing anything on dr1 about the 1 in cell phone numbers. Has that been confirmed?

Yeah, I havent heard of the "1" either. Does why also apply to cell-to-cell phones calls?

809 calling

is this required if you are calling from another country to the dr, or do we continue to dial 1-809-xxx-xxxx

I would sure like to see some confirmation if this is true. At the time of the original thread, there was an article included from one of the Dominican newspapers. It said nothing about 1 in cell to cell calls.

I can call regular phones with my cell wihout dialing 1.

No change in calls made from another country.

This comes into effect midnight tonight. El Caribe article a couple of days ago said those on dial up would need to reconfigure their computer server settings, however Verizon says this will be done automatically. Who to believe? Who knows!
My understanding is there will be a 'grace' period until July when both old & new dialling will work. Either that or Fred Karno's Circus! ;)

I got this straight from the head of technical services at Verizon. There is a grace period until July, until then both dialing methods should work (although we tried to call the colmado down the block last night and had to use 809). After July you will have to dial 1-809 for cell phones and long distance, meaning that if your calling Santiago from Santo Domingo you'll need to dial 1-809, but if your calling within SD just 809. New numbers will get the 829 area code with the same 1 prefix rules. She said that they considered area codes by region, but that it would have been more difficult to change numbers than to just add new numbers on top of the old system. Get ready to see a blitz of informational advertising preparing people for the new system, their main concern being that volume and revenues will drop due to the confusion.

So for cellphones the 1 goes before the 809. Oopsie! I stand corrected.

Try the news archives for Jan 15th, I can't access it right now (forgot password).

I just made a phone call from a cellular to a landline just by dialing 7 digits. Looks like nothing has changed. Could always use to area code.

I did phone calls all morning, land lines and cell phones and never had to dial 10 digits, just the same as before.

Not mandatory until July, as stated above. But you can use 10 digits, if you want to practice the procedure.
