Hi:
I was recently talking to a friend who was telling me about great Vacation sites in the Dominican Republic. They told me that Santana Beach Resort is a great site. It's a five-star hotel and very close to Casa de Campo, so occasionally they get famous people visiting the casino and hotel. I also hear the casino is very top-knotch. It's located in San Pedro de Macoris very close to La Romana. So if anyone is interested it's a very great hot-spot in the DR.

I was there for 2 weeks. That place is not a 5 stars, well at night you can see more than 5 stars in the horizon. Food and drinks are not 5 stars. The beach is bad for dominican standards. The only 5 star rating is the animation which is directed by a Cuban friend of mine. Do not know about the Casino.

I was there for about 4 days last year. With all due respect, your friend either owns the place or has no idea what a 5 star hotel is. The hotel itself was decent, the rooms were barely 3 stars. The beach was about a 2 star and I'm being generous.
The beach is surrounded by a barrier thus the water does not flow in and out of the beach easily. So while you have no waves, you also have cloudy water. The water is not blue, its like going to the beach in the northeast, that's how cloudy the water is.
The food was average at best.

If you're Italian and get to know the chefs (also Italian)

I hear they'll make "special" food for you. Otherwise you're stuck with what's served.
Also the resort is considerably "outside" of San Pedro with no easy access to transport into San Pedro. It's a long walk to the highway to catch a bus and taxi's from the resort are expensive.
All in all if you just want to sit on the beach drinking Cuba Libres it's not a bad place and the casino is there for those who like to part with their cash the easy way! ;)

5 stars????

I spent a week there too, for the holidays last year and I was really disappointed. The beach was a major let down and the food was awful. Only in the restaurants was it okay, but eating at the buffets and cafeterias was awful. The only cool thing was the pool and the bar in the pool... even the activities sucked....

5 stars??? in your dreams...

i was cleaning up the files on one of the memory chips and found a series of photos from Santana Beach. some of them are posted here. this is pretty much a typical A-I resort but is not top notch, 5* rated.
