Anyone here experimented with making Thai food here in this country? Wondering if there are any stores that specialize in Asian food products.

Santo Domingo has several Chinese supermarkets, in 'Chinatown' (Av Duarte/Mexico area) and on Av. Romulo Betancourt. Some Thai ingredients in stock.

The larger supermarkets like Carrefour, Nacional and Bravo have exotic foods sections which often include Thai stuff.

There are some specialist delis like L'Epicier de l'orient and Omaha Gourmet, both in Plaza Paseo de la Churchill on Av. Churchill / Pastoriza, with some Thai ingredients.

I've never found any decent asian food other than Chinese in Santo Domingo. There was an "ok" Japanese place on Abraham Lincoln about a block south of Verizon's Dominican HQ I think it was just called "Teriyaki".

Never seen a Thai place, a bit too spicy for Dominican tastes I guess.

Hey, it's my pleasure and no trouble at all. Nice to be appreciated though. :)

There are some 'faux Thai' places, or generic Asian that include some Thai dishes in the Naco and Piantini area. Can't think of the names now. Pib has checked some of them out and was not highly impressed, IIRC.

You guys are making me start to miss Manhattan, and those long 2 hour lunches in Chinatown. We would do Thai food at least once a week.

Korean is Asian, isn't it?

There are a number of authentic Korean restaurants in the area surrounding their little barrio in Bella Vista (Santo Domingo). For example, on calle 12 de Julio there is a place called Mennem that has Kimchi, barbecued short ribs and many other well known Korean specialities. Restaurant Bethel, nearby on Romulo Betancourt just west of the Burger King is more homestyle and has fewer seafood items. I need to emphasize that this is authentic Korean food. It is at least 100 times more spicy than what most Domincans describe as "muy picante." There are items that are not spicy and Bethel will tone it down on request because the owner told me they are trying to cater to a more mixed crowd. There is also a Korean supermarket on 12 de Julio. Enjoy.

there was one good restaurant, a bit pricey, but worth it, that had all kinds of asian food, and the pollo agridulce was Delicious. I can't remember the street, but it is the zona colonial, just below El Conde, on one of the cross streets, not quite as far as where the verizon office is, a few streets before and just as you turn the corner on your left. It turns into a bar later at night, and the atmosphere is kinda cool, they have live music on weekends....

To the one citing Thai/Asian food sources in Santiago-----

Would you PM me as to their direction and names please? I have a taste for a few Thai/Asian dishes and need to keep the condiments on hand for preparation.

Thanks

Asian food in Santo Domingo

Actually the place is called "Samurai". Very pricey. It's as close to real Japanese food as you'll ever get in DR. They have a Sunday lunch buffet, which, at RD$450 per head, is not a good deal. Much better bet is the Sunday buffet at Vetro?s Sushi Bar (Roberto Pastoriza No. 210, Tel: 563-4424, right across from both Taboo Bamboo and Pepino?s)

On Sundays from 12:30-4pm, they have all-you-can-eat buffet at RD$325 per head. The main draw of this buffet is the variety of sushis served, along with two kinds of sashimi, seafood salade, and a variety of other cooked dishes. Half of the items are seafood. Make sure to show up before 1pm otherwise it may be hard to find seating as word has apparently got out about this small but tasty gem.

Thai food

The only place in Santo Domingo that serves something remotely close to Thai food is at Soya (Plaza Andalucia, I, local 1-A, corner of Gustavo Mejia Ricart and Lincoln, Tel: 412-5292). They used to (not sure if they still do) serve a Thai special on Thursday nights where two appetizers and one main course cost RD$495. (when US$1 was still worth RD$50) The portions were huge and the flavor, though somewhat tasty, is not authentic Thai.

I would not be suprised if the price in RD$ has doubled and hence made it not worth a try.

Speaking of which, are there any Thai people living in DR ????

450 pesos a person is actually a pretty damn good deal. That's 15 bucks US a person for an authentic japanese meal and a complete escape from Dominican culture for a few hours. It costs me 35 US bucks up here in Washington DC for an equivalent Japanese meal in a nice setting (per person), and I remember that place on Lincoln was actually pretty damn good....so it has to be pretty authentic.

It is actually frequented by the Japanese families running the dealerships and parts dealers down there........I wouldn't be surprised if it was owned by one of them.

I suggest you guys try it out, the people who run it aren't chinese like all the other japanese places I found in the DR.......they're actually Japanese and quite friendly. It was a nice escape.....they even have some pretty cool gardens in the backyard (At least they did a few years ago).

Thanks for posting the name, I had forgotten. :)

I can attest to Samurai been an very good deal (by foreign standards) and damn good food. As for authentic, I can't say, never been in Japan, but it is as good as you would find in fine Japanese restaurants in Europe.

Now I have a craving for sushi. Damn!
