Don't believe that there is! Why unload the container? Have it delivered earlier in the day to final destination and unload the contents by hand into storage - that's what we did with a 20 foot box and another friend the same recently.

My friend owns his containers and needs them for storage.

Anyone?

You can roll it off the ship and haul it by truck to the final destination if the container is a trailer (container with fixed box) and the vessel is a roll-off roll-on type. If the vessel is not RORO, the carrrier will unload the trailer using their shore crane onto terra firma. then you haul it off to destination after clearing customs. He will have to deal with union truckers at the port. They are not cheap.

If the container is just a detachable box, your friend has a lot of work ahead of him. The carrier will discharge the container on their chassis. After clearing customs he needs to get the container and chassis to the final destination using the carrier's chassis. Normally the chassis maybe free for a certain period of use. demmurage applies if he goes over the alloted period. He will have to put up a deposit to Despacho Hispanola as a security deposit for the chassis.

A trucker, not of your friend's choice, but of the truckers union will haul the cargo to destination (big time rip off). Your buddy will have to have people and dollies at the destination waiting ready to unload the contents of the container. Once the container is empty it will have to be grounded using TWO forklifts with a lot of care. Means, he needs to rent the forklifts. He can rent a crane too. but that is way the hell too expensive. if the operation is fast, the same trucker will haul back the chassis. If not, your buddy will have to find another trucker to haul it back to the port (another rip off)

Lifting

Seriously,

I have helped out friends in the past with lifting off the 40 foot EMPTY containers. No joke. It took just 45 men to do the job.

Now we never tried to lift one ONTO the carriage - I think that would be much harder...

Don't think so. My friend actually reads and posts here on occasion but asked me to post.

When are you coming down? I MISS YOU AND NEED YOU HERE! LOL

Besides I am dying to meet your wife!

Escott

sure, you just want to horn in on my girl! did i mention she has a face like a shovel and a body like a house? oh, oh i think i am going to be castrated in a moment.

farm is still not sold. some farms in our area are taking up to a year to sell. i am just in limbo, leery of starting some new ventures here when we may suddenly have to vacate our country with 60-90 days notice.

the DR1 forum has become bittersweet for me. i am not doing well living in two places at once. one minute hauling wood and negotiating my farm land rent... the next shopping with my wife and helping her choose clothes that will work best in the DR.

if we didn't still have young kids, i think we would at least be in the DR for a few months over the cooler weather. but too disruptive for the kids.

back to the grind. mail me some of those seafood fritters.

and to those on the forum reading this post, be advised that Scott is a real SOB, opinionated and a true east coast American.

he is only tolerated by the expats because he is genuinely kind, open and generous. i am embarassed to say he has shown more kindness to this stranger in one visit than some of my "best friends" over the last 25 years.

all my love (in a purely manly, heterosexual manner),

Gregg

D.D. that was excellent and scary info. I hope the mover makes it ok.

As usuall, D.D. came through

The almost new Daddy (#3, a young lady is expected in July) was quite clear on this.
1) If the ship is RORO (Roll on, roll off) they (whoever "they" are) can take it to the guy's house. NP.

2) IF it is NOT RORO, then the poor devil falls into the hands of the local teamsters union and must
a) pay for the haul to his door
b) if not rapidly unloaded pay for, (what was that word? Oh yeah, demurrage) he will have to pay demurrage (for being so slow). However, since the containers belong to the person:
i) He can rent and have waiting, two forklifts to take the
container off the chassis. OR
ii) He can rent a huge crane for beaucoups cash and have it taken off.

c) He can get 50 men to lift off the "empty container."

Fork lifts can be rented in POP, most probably from Dep?sito Ferretero, but I am sure there are others.

If the containers are of the 20' size and are shipped empty it is possible to secure them on the bed of a large flat bed tow truck, grua. The truck has the capacity to tilt the bed for the container to slide off at the delivery location.
