I can tell you what's going on...

the president of the DR is too busy being a foreign diplomat. Too busy hobnobbing with world leaders to see that despite the artifically-induced rise of the peso against the dollar his country is still a mess. I wonder how those first class travel tickets get paid for when the Dominican budget has allocated only 4% of the money it needs to renovate classrooms. And don't forget that all-important metro project.
I wonder how many dominicans would leave their country if they had the chance. I'll bet you anything that if that happens the only people left in the DR will be the AI crowd and the sankies.

Very sad

Its sad to hear this. One of the things I used to love about this country was the relative feeling of safety that has vanished in the past 10 years. There is no respect for the law in the Dominican Republic and crimes like murder are more often than before.

The times are a changing for the worse... I'm afraid to admit!

Deep condolences MOC1 and of course to the widow. Victim apparently died of single shot to the head. The remains have been sent to Santiago Pathology facility. Perpetrator has yet to be caught, although Police are looking for the person named in El Nacional report. The spelling of victim's name in the report, is incorrect, but of course you know this.

Upset and greatly saddened

I know Geena and Roy and they are very nice people, as for Roy a very peaceful person and myself and friends of Geena and Roy are deeply saddened by what has happened.

So lets be honest are us foreigners living on the North Coast safe? simply the answer is NO! read the facts Norwegian shot, robbery's etc and what is being done NOTHING! Even the other night foreigners in a car were attacked with pepper spray whilst at a junction in their car.

Me personally i have had my Dominican wife held at knife point and recently a Dominican thief walk in my house at 3pm in the afternoon. So please forgive me but i'm getting ?$%#$ off with the inefficiency of the police.

Some of my friends have to pay the police 500 pesos a week or give food so the police will keep an eye out for them, phone the police then you pay them for their time or you can buy a gun. Buy a gun and shot a thief as the general of the Police says you go to prison and also the family of the deceased comes for revenge!

So what can you do? bar up your windows, hire a haitian with a large knife and never go out at night alone OR go home!

Me personally i don't give a dam about the disaster in the prison once a thief always a thief and i wish attention in the media highlighted increased crime and poverty that leads to crime instead of this #$#@$ing Metro or Leonel's jollies to other countries. Maybe then propaganda overseas will make Leonels purse hurt with the lack of toursits here on the North Coast to eventually do something about it........maybe.......

Single family housing is very risky here, there is safety in numbers

I could not agree more to your above post. As you mention, I have done "all of the above" for protection and am as ready as I can be for such issues. That said, who needs it.

For an another example, our gardener knows someone that was assaulted and robbed at their house in Islabon about one month ago ( they took an inverter) . The robbers were caught, but they are already out of jail.

All these stories are sad and it's terrible that this sort of thing is not really new here. What surprises me is that people who have been here for years and who should know better, insist on living in single family dwellings. The probability of falling victim to crime, violent or otherwise, is significantly higher in such housing because criminals can easily get you alone and have their way with you. It's even worse if you live in a more rural or isolated environment. It happens again and again, yet the "Little House on the Prairie" mentality is as popular as ever. I would personally prefer my own detached home but I won't do it for what are increasingly obvious security concerns. Stay safe.

A dog...............

A dog on its own has no value. Its has to be trained well to become a security dog. A dog on its own is just a joke. If they are willing to kill a person then how long will they think before they shoot a dog?

I also notice that a lot of people are more then willing to invest in a nice 4 wheel drive, a villa, a set of gold chains or whatever BUT..... when the alarm systems becomes a topic the big question is "were to buy it cheap"!!

A alarm system should be your basic safety device, eventually completed with a guard (one that doesnt sleep) and/or a dog.

A good alarm system will set you back a 2 to 3 thousend dollars but then you have heat/movement detectors in each and every room and radar movement detectors in the garden. At least one infra red camera but two would be best, connected to a monitor in the house. It is very well possible to make your house safe and still live comfortable in it, just not many people are willing to pay the price. Afterwards its always proven to be worth it.

Beside that, I really do feel for the widow of Roy ofcourse. This shoudnt have happend. My condolances.

Lessons from New Jersey

In the late sixties, I had an opportunity to observe the workings of the Mafia first hand in Newark, N.J. I learned they are the world's most equal opportunity employer--they don't care what the color of your skin is, or your religion. I learned that they have a wide range of activities, from small stuff to large. I learned that they have politicians and police in their pockets, and their pockets are very deep. In the States, the only thing that worried them was being caught for tax evasion. Since globalization, no one can keep track of international money flows. And why live in New Jersey when you can live in a tropical paradise and own the country?
I think what is happening on the North Coast, is NJ without even the pretence of law and order. The little crooks are like mercenary soldiers--they get bored on their days off and need to have some fun, killing people. And soon even the most honest of the working poor realize that their choice is to work for an AI or the mob. The DR is a wonderful country, but it sold its soul to the devil long ago.

Poncirus trifoliata

is the name of a natural 'razor-wire' plant, which is being used for perimeter security hedge. Lets suggest an enterprising DR1er to start a business selling these plants or even seeds in the DR...

What I heard about the Murder

I had coffee with a friend who is a European who works in a hotel in Cabarete and I was wondering if the story he told me is related to this thread. I believe it is without knowing for sure.

He went to the Police to inquire about the murder because rumor had it that it was commited in front of his hotel. Police said that it was in a Dominican Bar/tipico/gambling place(illegal) and that a German came in and made problems with the Dominicans and that is how/why it happened.

Is the fellow that was killed German?

He and his wife used to live in Costambar then built a house just outside of Cabarete. There are Barrio's near by, one is called El Chocos the other's name I am not familiar with but is farther to the west.

I disagree here, a large outside dog Is a big deterrent for would be robbers as they would not want to shoot a dog outside causing noise and thus spoiling a break in due to the attention. An inside dog also alerts you from intruders. You can also get an alarm system for under $1000. Dogs and alarm system can greatly increase your chance of stopping a break in or resulting crime, i.m.o. anyway, its worked for me so far while my neighbors have not been so lucky.

OK, but.....

As I say: a untrained dog by its own doesnt have any value. If a dog is not proper trained I can come in.

You are talking about the combination of a outdoor and a indoor dog + a alarm system.

Regarding the alarm systems I am not a expert but my brother is. He is a alarm specialist and works a.o. on government buildings. I have no doubt that a 1000 will buy you a decent system however, if he tells me that 2 to 3000 is regular for a free standing villa then I believe him. I was more surprised that many people here on the board are willing to invest in a villa with swimming pool and all other comfort but then start talking about security devices as cheap as possible. Beside all the material things to protect you are also talking about your family. Then a $ 50 device is not the right investment, I guess.
