I hope I am not stepping on any ones toes here, but let?s face it: a good part of the tourist do come to the DR because of the sex trade! If you take the brothels out of the DR it would be like taking the casinos out of Las Vegas...
Every one knows that weed is one of the major attractions in Jamaica, it would be hypocritical to deny it....Sure the DR as a lot to offer culturally, and the beaches are simply amazing....but the women do bring there contribution.
How much does the sex trade really represent to the DR's economy? Are there any statistics that are available on this topic? I may sound foolish, but I can often tell how well the DR is doing base on how well the prostitutes are doing... Isn't this a case of where the cure is worst then the disease?

Your thought process is seriously flawed."I may sound foolish..."--Ithink you should go straight to the corner and put on the biggest dunce cap you can find.
My apologies to the moderator but this is the only response I can think of that is suited .

I don't think there are any officially published statistics on how much prostitution contributes to Gross Domestic Product, for want of a better word ;) ..........but you may be interested in this article from yesterday's El Caribe. It says that the power outtages are contributing to an increase in 'open air motels' - prostitution in parks, cemeteries, street corners etc - because of course the commerce can be carried on in the dark. The rates which El Caribe quotes seem a little low to me! 30 pesos for oral sex & 50 pesos for 'all inclusive'..........not sure how much this is indicative of recession, either in that business or in the DR as a whole.

There are statistics available on related issues, sexually transmitted diseases etc., but not on the substantive issue you raise. If prostitution were state run & controlled then maybe stats. would be available, but in the DR it is generally a matter for private entrepreneurs who do not submit tax returns.

Thanks Lambada! If only most people would be so patient and understanding on this board  I know I might have raised a few eye brows with this post.
But you know me... when most people say why, I say why not? I certainly appreciate the info on the quotes for the different type of services... and if you can think of anything else please do drop a few lines...

Thkx a million!

They might be doing it on purpose, create a black market (aka USA style), the prices goes up & everybody wins.

Just like anything else here enforcement doesn't have legs. They will forget it in a couple of weeks.

I think "Gross" Domestic Product is what some people actually think that "industry" is. I would find it shocking, however, if it is true that one can get "service" for the price of a pack of gum in the US,or, "all inclusive" for the price of a Heineken.

Based on the amount of couples and families that come here, plus the numbers that stay in the resorts, sex tourists do not even make a blip on the radar.

I suggest you search our news archives or email Turismo on the numbers of tourists that come here and the type of tourists.
