Hi- I have 3 questions:
Is there anywhere in Santo Domingo with (Free) wireless or access to wireless?
And what is the cheapest way to get internet at one's own home in la capital?
Finally, I vaguely remember seeing a small device advertised for cheap as a simple alternative to a generator, something that you could use to power one or two electronics during a blackout- does anyone know about this?
Thanks a bunch!
(About to move to Santo Domingo in <1mo.)

www.
Try at Acropolis Plaza on Winston Churchill (if you have a laptop that sets to receive wireless Internet), also at the PUCMM and at INTEC universities. Courtyard Marriott offers wireless connecting in their lobby area.

You are probably referring to an inverter. See Trace Inverters, as one brand that is sold locally.

Your options for Internet are Tricom cable and Verizon. Both offer fast connections. See http://www.tricom.net and http://www.verizon.net.do

The most usual.
They have different plans you can chose from, both dial-up and flash.
See the above website.
Dial-Up is cheaper and slower, flash is faster and more expensive.
The most common, Flash VIP Plus is about 2.150/month plus tax, so shortly under 3000 pesos a month. (includes dsl modem, phone, and local calls ).

You also need a UPS to the computer, and the other thing you mention looks to me it is either a UPS you talk about ( only to be able to close the computer in a regular sense when electricity goes off ) or a small inverter for 2 plugs, combined with a battery...

Guess you are talking about an inverter for blackouts, and about free internet wireless access Im not sure but I guess is not for free Centennial, Verizon and Orange has 3G network, here the internet access is too expensive because you must have a phone line with a package that give you all local minutes free and then pay for the internet account.

Another option is Aster, which offer internet and cable services (the internet doesn?t requiere phone line)
At the beginning I had a lot of problems with my cheap dial up conexion, changed to Aster ( it?s cheaper than the Verizon?s flash conexion) and so far not problem.
