We had a great time last Saturday at the Voodoo Lounge - JR did very well serving up a delicious meal for us all.

We had 30 people for the Club ESO dinner & movie - which we will do again. It was so nice sitting outside to have dinner and to watch the Aviator movie on a big screen.

Club ESO are organising a trip to Santiago in July for around 12 people. We will probably do this once a month.

Contact me at sylviacheal@hotmail.com for more information about Club ESO.

I got nailed once for charging admission to show movies in my nightclub, a few years ago.
If ESO is renting movies from a movie rental place and showing them in the bar, I think they may be running the risk of getting nailed.

Hi
Thanks for your warning but Club ESO did not rent any movie. We had dinner
and a movie at the Voodoo Lounge which was all arranged with the Manager
and as far as I know it was all legal :bandit:

Unfortunately (no offense to Chester4 :nervous: ), there's a zero percent chance of that happening in the DR. Copyright laws are rarely enforced in the DR.

Three years ago the Golden Park Gym was showing first run movies. After a few weeks they were not. I asked the fellow in charge of the movies what happened. He said the movie theater in Puerta Plata found out and threatened them with closing of the Gym if they continue. I guarantee if the movie theatre in Puerta Plata finds out you wil have mucho problems also.

Just as a note as I work with other companies the owners of the cine theatres have, and know how this works here;
There is only 1 distributer who provides movies to the 2 cinemas in Puerto Plata. The newest movies comes to Cinemar in Playa Dorada first, and then to Cine Roma in the city, as a mutual agreement between the distributor and the 2 owners.
The owners are Roger Mariotti ( more known as the owner of the islandwide
company SeaPro Divers ) and the Costa Family ( Owns Amber Museum among other companies ).
These guys are not to play with, they are working hard for their businesses.

If a movie was shown by club ESO, it must have been rented on DVD as the movie, The Aviator, was just released on DVD here on the island.

Maybe not many copyright laws are followed in DR, but be careful with this.
The people running the cinemas here are businessmen first of all, and not only from DR, they are raised with other values.

Movie nite

What would be the case if you were not renting the movie, but rather just showing someone's personal DVD????

you are still not allowed to show a movie, yours or rented, in a public location for people.

The title of the thread is "Club ESO - Dinner & Movie" and, a little further down in the first post, it says:

PRICE : 390 pesos Club Members
450 pesos Non Members

AND, in the next thread by our good friend Sylvia(Chester4)
she said:

"We had 30 people for the Club ESO dinner & movie - which we will do again". The Aviator was still showing a few days ago in local theaters.

Sylvia, if you want to split hairs, be my guest. You had a dinner & showed a movie, and charged admission. Thats a fact. Please don't play word games.

When I got nailed, it wasn't even here, it was in Puerto Rico, where I had a club, and showed movies. I was visited by the local D.A.

I'm sure you are an intelligent person, and understand what copyright and intellectual property laws are, and how the DR has, in the past, gone after people that abused the law.

I don't have a problem with you showing movies and charging, hell, I imagine the dinner without the movie is a good deal!

As I said before, you MAY be running the risk of getting nailed. That's all.

Hi and thanks for your advice. Club ESO DID NOT cook the meal or show the movie. We had this service from the Voodoo Lounge who I presume did what they had to do to enable us to have a very enjoyable evening.

Since I am sure all of the profit from the proceeds were donated to a local charity I bet the local tax authorities won't bother you!

The local tax authorities would have nothing to do with the copyright of showing a movie. That is the place that sold the service that would need to have a permission from the distributer of the specific movie on the island.
And the rights to all movies shown in public here on the Northcoast is held only buy the 2 former mentioned companies, Cinemar and Cine Roma.
Has nothing to do with the folks that watched the movie or the club that offered the service they bought to the people.
If you charge for a service that included copyrighted material, i.e a movie you must make sure you have the permission as well.

It's amazing how you quickly passed the buck to the Voodoo lounge, making them responsible for any illegal activities related to the event you organized.
Do you remember writing this?

If you are advertizing the event and collecting the moneys, you can hardly put the blame on the Voodoo Lounge.

Listen Rocky ..... I don't know what problem you have with me BUT get of my case. The money collected was to pay for the dinner.

I am just stating facts not blaming anyone or passing the buck for anything.

As I remember I am also looking for 'brownie points' for the organisation of the security meetings. I told you then that I had no time for slanging matches
with you. You obviously have so much time on your hands to keep these matches going - I do not.

Give me a f'ing break!!

In a country that even the limpiabotas and their kids are breaking the laws, who cares if a movie was shown without permission!!!!. Let Martin Scorcese worry about it. Next time just say: "Dinner" and then show the movie as a "gift"!!!!!

We are not supposed to download music from the internet and we do!
We are not supposed to buy drugs and some do!
We are not supposed buy dvd's 'pirateao" and some do!
We are not supposed to record copyrighted movies and we do.

When I am doing my BBQ's at my home, at least 10 times a year, there have been 50 people at once(yes, i do have 50 friends, hehe) and I, sometimes, show the latest dvd movies on my projector. Am I supposed to pay taxes or worry that I am breaking some type of law?.

Come on people, for the love of God, these people had a gathering and they had fun while there. Are some of us so petty that we can not be happy for them. Aren't we happy to have a politician or a high ranking officer as our friends?. Most of them break the law every single day of the week. Most. I rather worry about the poor and what's going on around the world.

Btw, if anybody from this board who has any type of VHS tapes that they wanto to transfer to DVD's, let me know. I would gadly do it for you. Illegal, yes, but who cares. I don't!!!!!. No porno, please, hehe.

Now you listen.
I'm not the one who started this thread, nor was I the one to point out to you that you might be doing something illegal.
I simply pointed out that you cannot advertize an event, collect the moneys for it, then shift the blame onto the Voodoo lounge for any of your illegal activities.
I have told you before that the correct word is "slinging" and not "slanging", but you don't bother to listen, so when you start your post with, "Listen Rocky", perhaps you should start doing some listening yourself.
Eveytime I point out the inconsistencies in your stories, you try to make it personal.
It's not personal for me.
You we're wrong to shift the blame, and I pointed out to you.
If you can't take being wrong in public, don't go out in public.
