Lots and lots of stores sell them.
I buy them in Santiago and I think Escott buys them in POP.
I believe they cost approx the same as in America, or a bit more.
(We've bought them from Plaza Lama & Pricesmart)

Thanks, looks like a visit to Plaza Lama is long overdue. That's one experience I have not had yet in the DR. ;)

For comparison in Canada I can buy an offbrand, 7300 BTU A/C for $270 CAD or $222 USD (6316 pesos @ 28.45).

If I remember correctly, I bought a brand name 10,000 BTU, last time for $300 US & change.
I can't remember exactly, but very close to that price.
It also came with remote control.

That sounds like a reasonable price, with remote included. Thanks

Why doesn't any body seem to check Yellow Pages?

Everywhere I go to I try to pick up a recent copy of the local YellowPages. So, I did so too when I visited Santo Domingo. It's not just to have some bed time lecture or to study funny languages... but, besides finding things it has become a tool to me to measure a coutry's or city's economy and drive as well as to see what does not seem to exist and also to see how agressively or not things are advertised (competition).

There is a large segment on AC vendors in the SDO YellowPages.
