Hi, I visited the East Coast 3 1/2 years ago; we are planning another trip to the Dominican Republic. We are considering the North Coast, Puerto Plata.

My question is, have any of you visited this section and what are your recommendations. We would like a family friendly resort. A golf Course on the premises would be fantastic. However, the most important thing is Family friendly.

Any advice would be great?

Thank you,
JC

If the resort does not have a golf course, public golf courses recommendations would also be great.

look into "Playa Dorada" in general. There are 14 or 17 resorts there including the one mentioned above. The complex (it is rather large) is family friendly. Also Ocean World (swim with the dolphins) and Fun City (ride go carts, etc) are both short distances away.

www.vivaresorts.com is the only website I know off hand, but I'm sure a quick google of Playa Dorada could lead you to some more info.

The golf course at Puerto Plata Village wraps throughout the complex. Playa Grande golf course is about a two hour (?) drive down the coast, but in my humble opinion, it's worth it just for the view, let alone the golf.

North Coast Golf

You have a choice of four or five courses depending on how much you like golf.

Right there at Playa Dorada you have the Robert Trent Jones course, very friendly. The Playa Dorada Complex is, in and of itself, very family oriented.

Then you have the greatest course around--Playa Grande. Said to be Jones'"greatest achievement" and, by those that have played them both, equal, at least to Pebble Beach......

There is a tiny little course over at CoastAmbar--a 9 holer.

And of course the Pete Dye little gem in Santiago, an hour 15 minute ride away.Much less expensive, even for visitors, since Santiago is not a tourist town by any means. Green fees of less than $30.00, Carts about $15 and caddies the same. Beer is cheap, too. And the course is in good shape.

And last, is the beautiful 9 holes in Jarabacoa, a mountain setting with the smell of pine trees and tropical fruits in the air. Another Jones design, legend has it he laid out the track on a napkin as a favor to the golfer trying to build it...it is difficult and never boring, 18 holes there seem like 18 different holes...

All of the places are family friendly.

Puerto Plata Village in Playa Dorada has a Golf Course

No, they don?t. The golf club is independent, does not belong to any hotel.

Playa Dorada, is located about 6 km from Puerto Plata. It is a child friendly area all together.
The area consists of 15 hotels, 14 of them are all inclusive, and also a 2 floor Plaza with shops, bars, excursion sellers, cinema, restaurants and bars.
The golf club is located spread over the area ( see previous postings ).
There is also casino and a few discos.

The beach is fine for kids as well as adults.
There are beach activitites, and you can also buy extra water fun activities.
Playa Naco Hotel, and also a few others I think, have a kids club with actitivities for the kids. Even though any hotel take good care of the kids, not to worry at all.

There are many extra excursions you can go on with children as well, depending on their age.
You may want to spend a day on a catamaran with all meals and drinks included as well as spectacular snorkeling in Sosua Bay.
Or you may want to go on a jeep safari out on the beautiful countryside, also includes meals, drinks, swim in rivers and so much more.
You may want to go to Columbus Aqua-Park, shorly before Sosua and have fun in the many pools. Full day pass around 300 pesos.
Just a 5 min drive from Playa Dorada you also have go-carts at Fun City.

And most of all you will have each other, the beach, the sun and an relaxing time together.

Jack Tar is NOT child friendly. It is childless.

YOu are getting lots of good info here. Besides family friendly what else is important - grade of hotel, on the beach, number of pools, quality of restaurants... etc. CHeck out the websites, narrow it down to a couple of hotels then go read the trip reports! Then of course, feel free to ask us more questions.

Many hotels have kids club programs. Some hotels are more child friendly then others. How old are your children?

I would not recommend the Occidental playa Grande though. It is not really a good choice for children. But you really should go and golf there though! IT is stunning.

Playa Dorada Golf Course is in good shape as well. It is more friendly! At least it is for me, Playa Grande is quite challenging....LOL

Wow, thank you all for all the great info, I like the list of Golf Courses, although I?m not sure how far they are from where the hotels are, I?ll have to do some more research.
It does look like there are many ?good? hotels in the area,

Carina, you seem to know the area well?

Fireguy, thanks for the website, for some reason I didn?t find this one on my Google searches?

Hillbilly, thanks for the list of courses, I wonder if I will need to rent a car to get around, since they are not all in the same area.
I did see a post regarding Playa Grande, I?m planning to go there at least once, the problem is that as a single player, it might be tough to get in (wife and kids don?t golf?. yet)

Thanks all?
