Hello!

My clients are staying in the Playa Dorada Complex.
Where is the best place to change US Dollars for RD?
At the airport? Hotel? Plaza/Mall in the Complex?

Thanks a bunch for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

This message board is the BEST!

Airport booths run by the banks are usually quite fair. Ones in hotels tend not to be so in the town the cambios are normally a better deal.

I agree with Rick. Change money at airport locations or cambios in town. Generally hotels give a lower rate, and people on the street (there are a lot of them) should be avoided because there hands are quicker than your clients eyes. Stick with the established money changers.

You can also suggest to your clients they check with several places since there are differences. Not big, but still many people like to get as much as they can for their dollars.

I agree with Ken. Never change money with the people on the street.

Unlike in the the US, the airports in the DR give a competitive rate. The hotels and casinos generally give a less competitive rate. The difference between the two can be as much as 3%.

Casinos often have a BETTER rate.
After all they want YOUR money @ the tables.
I agree about avoiding hotel counters.
Just use the Airport Cambio if you need a few bucks upon arrival.

Also this airport rule applies IN the DR since the cambio booths are usually run by banks like BR.

NEVER ever buy (or sell) pesos at a cambio booth in YOUR airport in the USA, UK , wherever unless you want to pay 25% more and a fee and /or receive 25% less plus a fee.

Absolutely a rip-off, and a total waste of time since in the DR the airport booths are almost always open to meet the flights. If not having $20-30 in $5's and $1's will do just as well until the next day. For taxi and tips.

I'm glad you clarified that, Rick. Never dawned on me that people might think we were talking about exchange booths in their own country.

I agree with most. The POP airport is fair, but not the best. The hotels are not good rates. The casinos are the worst rate. They would rather rip you with the exchange before they rip you at the tables. Many of the locals and ex-pats in POP use the cambio located in the Mariposa Ice Cream store next to Central Park.

Some casinos, not all give you a decent rate.

I have gotten a great rate @ The Gran Almirante in Santiago and Jaragua, in The Capital (which is Ban Reservas). I guess it also depends on the climate of Peso/USD demand as well.

In Playa Dorada, the best place to change US$ is at Paradise Resort.
It is just past the Playa Dorada Plaza.
Fun Royale is the same but I don't know if you can get to the cambio unless you are staying there.
The airport cambio is also the same.
You will get 1-1.5 more pesos per US$ than at the PD Plaza, and around .5 pesos more than at the cambios in Puerto Plata.

In the Plaza, in Playa Dorada, the best rate is given by the exchange office located at Western Union. It is on the groundfloor, in the back, right beside the Amber Museum Shop. They are giving rates higher than Rusa for instance.

In the city, as someone mentioned, the banca at Mariposa Ice Cream Parlor, by Central Park, and also Casa Nelson gives the same exchange rates as that banca.

Have used this place when on vacation for over 10yrs., locals turned me onto it. Also great rates for calling home (10 min about $2US).
