Santo Domingo is not " Saint Dominic". Santo Domingo is " Holy Sunday". There is another Santo Domingo in Brazil, if that is the case, then it would be " Sao Domingo" in Portuguese.

San Jose de Ocoa. Jose is Joseph, not Joshua. Joshua in Spanish is " Josue".

Thank you for the San Jose correction.

And Santo Domingo is Saint Dominic. Domingo is Dominic in English and Santo is Saint.

The full name of the city is Santo Domingo de Guzman, who is a recognized saint in the Catholic church, the prime reason behind all these cities and towns being named after holy saints.

Saint Dominic was also the baptismal saint of Christopher Columbus's father (whose name was Domingo), and its reputedley that the village of Nueva Isabela was renamed Santo Domingo to commemorate Christopher's and Bartholomew Columbus father shortly after the village was rebuilt on the left bank of the Ozama River.

My favorite translations of Dominican places are for some of Santiago's barrios:

Cienfuegos= One Hundred Fires
Nibaje = Don't Even Go Down
Matanzas= Killings. (There is a Farmacia Matanzas and of course a Cl?nica Matanzas, I'm not sure its good for marketing.) :bandit:

BTW, I believe that Santiago de los Caballeros refers to Knights (as in shining armored Hidalgos) and not to Gentlemen (as in modern-day dandys). :eek: :cross-eye

A cool name, but difficult to literally translate: La Descubierta = The Bared One vs. The Opened One vs. The Discovered One vs. The Cleared One vs. The Caught in Fraganti One. ;)
