I am not too sure if I am allowed to post a link to an excellent article (am I going to be edited ?), but anyway, here it is, for those of you who read spanish... I thought it would be in the DR1 news, but maybe tomorrow :
http://clavedigital.com/Portada/Articulo.asp?Id_Articulo=6123

For those of you guys who don't read spanish, it's an article about Professor Antonio Perpi?an, the biggest Linux guru of the island.
He explains the whole deal about not paying big bucks to Microsoft, and forming dominican technicians on using Linux and then being constructive by using open source software.

I went to the "Codigo Libre" foundation's branch in Santiago and was very impressed by the level of education, awareness, and high technical skills of either Perpi?an, or other teachers, and all those young dominican adults (most in their 20's)...

For further infos : www.abiertos.org (it's the dominican GNU-Linux Portal)

Read, and tell me what you think (I might be a bit partial, since I dropped Windows, and use various Linux distros on my pc's...No viruses, no spyware...)

I agree with you. No, you'll probably not be edited (unless you're looking for fees to join your Linux Portal). But for a society that can barely spell Windoze, I think this all is quite a reach... There simply is not the technical expertise in the DR.

This goverments nose is very deep in the A$$ of Microsoft Dominicana, Billy even visited Leonel in the DR.
Why should computersystems work, money should it make.
My opinion is that NEVER will any cost saving system will be installed in this country, because there is a lot of pocketmoney on the other side.

And also, not having, Spyware, Virusses, automatically installed crapware, anti-virus software, anti advertisement blockers, firewalls, registry cleaners, pc-doctors and the latest viagra, penisenlagers, screensavers and other automatically advertisements is not COOL, and you cannot show-off to others with a clean system, that actually works.

But i am partial too, already for a loooooooooooooong time, since w3.1 crashed too much for me.

But if it pays enough i will "try" to fix windows problems, because you cannot get rich if you service only the "other/alternative operating systems", because they actually work and don't need much service.
(thats what they call cost-saving)

And BTW the term "alternative" or "other" operating systems is completely wrong, those (linux, os/2, unix , beos, mac, etc) excisted already BEFORE, windows was (and still is) in his diapers

Pelegr?n reclama desarrollar gobierno digital

Here's a politician who felt it might be a worthy cause... He'll get all of us geeks voting for him !!!

see this : http://www.elnacional.com.do/app/article.aspx?id=38728

To Chris : quote :" There simply is not the technical expertise in the DR," I thought the same before spending a year and a half spending week-ends in Santiago, knowing the IT tech community, most of them are quite on the same level that their european or american counterparts... I met web-site designers, Cisco network profesionals, hardware technicians, open-source enthusiasts...
Quite a surprise for a guy like me who has been living a long time in different areas of the north coast...

Ok, I guess you find such skilled people only in major cities... As a society, you're probably right on a broad perspective...

To DunHill : yeah, I guess FunGlobe and Leonel's campaign received a bunch of gifts from Micro$oft, and it's now payback time... Plenty of commision for wealthy politicians in brand new flashy jeepetas... And we are being told to save, ration fuel and all... It's quite cynical...

Linux is different, invented by this guy born in 1969, http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_Torvalds, it's open source, none of the other ones are. You can download the operating system, including the source code, from Red Hats website http://fedora.redhat.com/download/
Red Hat is just one of many different Linux versions. Mozilla supported by Netscape is another open source creation worth looking at.

You may find techs that can install Linux or who play in the open source community or who has attended a Cisco course here locally. You find very very few who have any grasp or depth of experience using technology to run businesses/organizations. My experience is that most technologists here are undereducated and lack depth and focus. This does not mean that they do not talk the talk, it is just walking the walk in the market place - there is a lack of experience, a lack of good role models, and a lack of depth of knowledge and experience. There is no real sense of information (data), how to use it, how to deploy it and how to make it work.
