Why isn't DR into Solar power?

Maybe its because I dont know enugh about the situation in DR, but why isnt there a big movement to take the country to solar power. is it too expensive, is it unreliable ( I have a friend in california who uses it and says it has been unreliable for her), is it because of theft?

I imagine that those companies producing solar panels would be all over Dr trying to accessorize the country.

any imput?

This looks like it can be worth the investment.

Hi Robert,

As you know my website will be posted on DR1 shortly. Using renewable
energy for homes, offices & commercial/industrial applications is what
my Dominican based company is all about.

Solar air conditioning is a major item. Solcool is one of the brands
currently under review by my engineers. The unit looks good on their
website but efforts are made to find out if this manufacturer is here
to stay, warranties are met and spare parts will be available for the
years to come. If I am convinced Solcool is a reputable company,
I may bring in a few units as a trial basis. The $13,000 price tag
you posted is for the USA market. My retail price for the DR is expected
to be approx $8,450 ( no import duties included as per CAFTA).

Regards,
Georgios.

I have posted in the past about the DR being looked at internationally for rural off-grid stand alone systems for the last 20 years. These are small 35-75w systems providing 100-300 w/hrs a day of electricity. There has also been a group of people who have developed larger PV systems, small wind and hydro systems. Large community water systems were paid for USAID in the 90's using PV. Those who have the resourses tend to invest in generators for needed energy and are detered by the large initial capital cost and the maintanence required.

When I was in the business, I didn't know anyone who really made money only selling renewable energy. There are a few success stories. The people who have lasted the ups and downs had some other business activity going on and didn't soley rely on renewable sales. It sure would be fun giving it a try.

Hello Tom F.

Renewable energy providers in general, supply equipment for power

1. wind turbines from 300w to 20kw. (robust build, low RPM's)
2. tilt-up, tilt-down towers, 12VDC winch operated (no cranes req'd)
3. related controllers & chargers (hybrid wind/solar option)
4. Pure sine wave inverters 1500 watt (added electronic protection )
5. Surge arrestors & capacitors (grid surges & lighting strikes)
6. Solar pool pumps (AC, generator back-up capable)
7. solar well submersible pumps (powered by wind, solar, genset or AC grid)
8. solar air conditioners (house or office)
9. misc electronics & accessories.
10. AGM batteries & racks (10-15 year life, maintenance free)
11. GE solar panels (latest tech)

My engineers can design larger wind/diesel hybrid systems for hotels,

DC air-conditioner

http://www.dcairco.com/

The units for Telco housing were in the 10K USD range a year ago. They now have a split-ac unit they advertise for truckers.

They say it is 3 to 4 times more efficient than a 10,000 BTU AC unit.
