I'd like to know too...

I have looked around the capital and I only found a poor or limited choice or very expensive.
Sure you can go the bamboo and ratan way, but if you are going for home style...
In Ecuador and Colombia you'd find villages or city suburbs that specialise in furniture making, form medium enterprises to little mom and pap shops. Some made excellent furniture for ridiculous prices... I haven't seen that in the DR yet, but then my insight is yet quite limited.
However, if it cna't be found in the DR, importing would be the last result.. I've just gotten some newspaper centerfold form Puerto Rico... Full bedroom (5-6pcs) USD 999.oo, dining rooms seating 6 (8-9 pcs) USD 999.00... 3-2-1 livings same story. And then is custom order in Colombia or Ecuador... But that's jsut what I am conidering IF I don't find out something I don't know about yet.
Hopefully somebody will bring good news here.

... J-D.

For better or for worse, the best selection is in Santo Domingo

Depends what you mean by expensive. Conforama in the MegaCentro in the Zona Oriental has a pretty good middle-range selection, modern, rustic and traditional mock antique styles. I was at the furniture department in Almacenes Unidos this morning and thought it was pretty good, also middle range.

There are more expensive places in Naco and Piantini, with beautiful stuff - Basicos, Iluminel (sp?) and a new place on Gustavo Mejia Ricart approaching Lincoln. There is also one on Fantino Falco, just before Body Shop gym.

Von in Julieta, on one of the streets that runs behind La Sirena is outstanding but on the pricey side.

How about carpenters/ebanisterias?

Can't you find a carpenter or furniture maker to make good mahogany furniture for a reasonable price? I lived in PR and found a recommended person to make a beautiful custom made wall unit--there has to be people like this in DR. Additionally, I lived in Ponce, PR and there was a wonderful furniture store with stuff from DR that was gorgeous--the name is Le Rose or something to that effect--she got her furniture from somewhere in DR. I will be relocating to SD October and I was thinking the same thing--have someone make my furniture--any suggestions out there?

It is not ethical to advertise one's own business on the board.

Worst case scenario, send a PM to the person but don't advertsie publicly.

Robert of DR1 will gladly talk to you about advertising (paid) on DR1.

You Should Look At "CONFORAMA" In Santo Domingo!

It is on 27 de Febrero, between Lincoln and Chuchill.
Two friends of mine from Juan Dolio just furnished their condo with furniture from there. Leather couches,"Micro-fiber loungers,NICE STUFF! Mostly imported, much cheaper than Dominican made. ONLY thing to buy Dominican is Solid"Caobo" wooden tables chairs,chest-of-drawers,and bed frames!

"Stuffed" furniture made in the DR,falls apart!
By the way,"Wicker"/"Ratan" doesn't last either!
Now for all of you who can't wait to say:."I have dominican Furniture and it's VERY well made, and lasts a LOOOONg time!"..You don't have 9 people in your house,4 kids,3 dogs,2 cats, and lots of "Relatives" who come by to let their kids "Jump" on EVERYTHING!!

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" the "Pleasures" of marrying a "Dopminicana"!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Hey!",that "P" was a "typo",but I LIKE IT!!

I can use THAT! Goes well with,.."Duminicans"!!!!
cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
