My husband and I are in the process of moving to the DR. We are wanting to rent a room in the Santo Domingo area. It is our preference to live with a family to help us learn spanish and dominican culture. Any up-to-date estimates on what the price should be (per month) for a room and 2-3 meals a day (provided by the family.) Or, if calculating food into the equation is too difficult - what is a reasonable price for a room?? How much money would 2 people need for food - eating modestly (cooking for self and eating out 1 time a week)?

Also, any ideas how much someone with a college education, working a decent job, would make per hr. We are looking at paying a Dominican to help us when we arrive, but have no idea what to offer per/hr. (This person is about 35 and has a college education.)

Prices in pesos are fine - we can do the conversion. Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

Amerispan, the in country Spanish teaching company adds $145 US a week or $22 a day for homestay vs. non-homestay courses in SD. And they say small room , basic food.
