Hi,

I recently moved to WI from IL. I am still kind of lost, because I don't know anybody here yet.

Where do you buy platanos here? Where can I get my hair relaxed? Any dominicans in the area?

Thanks for your message!!!! ;)

Having lived in the Milwaukee area for many years, I feel qualified to respond to this one.
There are very few Dominicans in the Milwaukee/Waukesha area, but there are some. There is a young UW-M student, and some missionaries (we have missionaries here too) and a couple of youngsters too. Check the archives on dr1. The UW student posted, so you can probably get in touch.
Muskego is probably 40 minutes from Milwaukee, and usually, you can find platanos in Pick n Save.
We now live in the Madison area. A little over an hour from Milwaukee.
Minneapolis is in Minnesota, about 6 hours from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Welcome to the area.

hey

thanks for your reply.

Muskego is a very pretty area. There are many lakes out here. I live very close to a lake called Lake Denoon. I am waiting for the snow to melt so that I can go out and enjoy the nature. LOL

take care my compatriotas.

I once drove by Wisconsin. Nothing but corn fields and farmers markets. :cross-eye

Wisconsin is a beautiful state. One of my favorites. If you like potato salad, you can't be from too far away.

You and all people from Wisconsin are so kind! :classic:

I stayed at Wisconsin Dells and Madison for a week. It is indeed a very beautiful state.

I had a dinner buffet at Ho Chunk Casino and the food was excellent!

Happy Holidays!

On University Avenue in Madison, there is a Steak House (I forgot the name of it). It is across the street from Atlanta Bread house. The food was fantastic!!!

Do you live in Wisconsin?

Happy Holidays!

Northern USA....MN/WI

Hello to all...I am a new member and felt like jumping in on this thread! I am from Minnesota, living very near the MN/Wisconsin border. I just spent December in the DR and will be returning for the month of March.

This thread made me laugh, especially the generalized comments made about Wisconsin and its farms. It's true that WI is mostly farms, but each larger metropolis has its own charm. My uncle is a professor at the University of Madison, so I am more partial to Madison than Milwaukee...but I have a friend there too. The Sosua area was described on one website as a "charming little farming town known for its meat and cheese". It's the same as calling the MN/WI area a "farm"...Wisconsin is known for its cheese (just watch a Packers football game...they wear cheese on their heads!) But there's always more to a place! Between Cabarete and POP there is a lot more to do than milk cows.

Being from Minnesota, though...I have to encourage you to try our beautiful state also! Especially in the summertime. Right on the license plate it says "Land of 10,000 Lakes." I live on Lake Superior, near the "Twin Ports" area of Duluth/Superior. I also recommend, if you haven't already, visiting the "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Again, unless you love to ski...visit in the summertime. Leave your Packers gear at home...we are Vikings/Twins/Timberwolves fans here.

I know your post asked if there are any Dominicans in the area...but would you settle for a "culture exchange" program from a northern US girl, trying to learn about the DR? ;)

I thought the licence plate said "Land of 10,000 mosquitos" :classic:

The name of the restaurant on University Avenue is Smokey's. We ate dinner there last Monday.

My wife and I are native Wisconsinites, were raised in Mileaukee, but have lived in Madison for the past 35-years.

We holiday in the Dominican Republic annually and are in the process of preparing for our 16th trip to that wonderful country.

Plantanos are usually available in most large grocery stores in Wisconsin. Sometime hard to find ripe fruit. Also usually not stocked in large quantities.

Impossible to find Presidente in this part of the world!!!!!!

Welcome to the wonderful State of Wisconsin. The State contains over 12,000 lakes, billions of trees, great schools and high taxes! But still a great place to live.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone that so kindly answer to my message.

I am so glad to learn that so many of you vacation in DR.
I would love to go back to my country, but instead of staying with my family there, I want to stay in Samana or Punta Cana.

What is your favorite destination in DR?

Pretty dreary

Hello Sachamay,

With no sun for two weeks I can see why your mind drifts to the DR. Punta Cana and Samana are two of the most beautiful locations on the Island if not the entire Carribean. I own the golf center and miniature golf course in Muskego but I spend most of the winter traveling and playing golf in the DR. If you have money it's a paradise. Right about now it's 85 and sunny, the whales are returning to Samana Bay, the Clintons are vacationing in Punta Cana, Aventura will be performing at Altos de Chavon and you have do your homework and shovel snow in Wisconsin. You've got a leg up on most people, at least you know where you want to live. BTW, Muskego is wonderful in the summer; too bad it only lasts three weeks. Stop by in Spring and I'll give you a CD of the latest bachatas.

I was going to post a smart-alec reply until I saw that it was you! But you're mistaken about it saying that on our license plates. The mosquito is our state bird. ;)

And a wonderful bird it is.

I had a group of minnesota golfers come down and played at Playa Dorada - one of them came to me after their first day on the course he said "I have had a horrible allergic reaction to something, it itiches horribly and I am not sure what it is" As I went to the other side of the tour desk I looked at his legs and informed him he had been bitten by the dominican cousin of the minnesota state bird.
I guess it goes with winter driving - once the seasons change you forget what it is.

My friend and I both met those same leg-biting cousins. She chose to go to the doctor, pay $100 for some cream, pills, and a "stay out of the sun". Oh yeah, and some kind of cortizone shot, in the butt. She stayed in the hotel room the last 2 days of our trip together. I, on the other hand, chose to go out in the sun, cover up my legs on the beach at night, switch from daquiris to beer, and use the "new" skin-so-soft" stuff. She went back home to below zero weather (no mosquitos at all) and I just went to another beach for another week. Mine "healed" faster. It really scared her, though...she thought it was an allergic reaction. Who knows. I guess it's sometimes better to be safe than sorry ~ but I once had an allergic reaction to something in Mexico, and when I went to the pharmacy I ended up with something that turned my tongue as yellow as the smilies on this page. Not my sexiest moment.

I asked a friend of mine if he knew of any local things to use, and he just laughed and said that because our skin was SO white, the bugs would bite.

Benadryl works too. I had the guys take that and amazing their bites lost their itch. I also advised them against playing golf close to sunset in Playa Dorada where the mosquitos come out in full force.

It was very hard for me to keep a straight face while explaining the body's reaction to mosquito bites and how they do differ being in the DR but basically are the sameto this group from Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Hi there :)

I've been to Smokie's one time. The food is excellent!

Across the street from Smokies is a nice bakery called Atlanta Bread Company.

I visited Madison once. It is a very beautiful city.

There is another bakery called Scott's Bakery.

Now I'm hungry. lol

Good night! :classic:
