34.9 yesterday. It should hit 40 soon.

I checked in Alex Cambio a few days ago, but it?s been more or less the same the 5 weeks that we?ve been here. In Nagua they are the best, usually.

-How about that wild guess :

the tourist industry and the "Zona Franca" tycoons got together with gvt top shots, and they finally agree to depreciate a bit the "supposely over-valued" peso, slowly climbing from 28 to 35...
I remember when people from tourism were asking for a 37 to 1 rate... We seem to go there...
However, gvt needs cheaper US$ to pay the bills monthly... So a compromise makes sense... Maybe 34, maybe 34...
We?ll see...

(of course, I might be totally wrong !!!)

The central bank rate is 34,9055 today and as it has gone up in the last few days I am sure that Alex Cambio has followed suit.
In Las Terrenas I got 33,90 on 12/30 and Alex usually pays 0.10 to 0.20 more which normally does not make it worthwhile to drive there.Call him (584-2470 / 2666) and you'll find out today's rate.

A long term range of 35-38 seem plausible....the lower rates recently allowed government to pay back Intl loans cheaply....now the gov. let the rate go up as requested by the business sector.

The Government is done buying Dollars, for the time being, and has a net long position in Dollars PERIOD. The "Cambio Club" decides which way the Tasa goes. Those that budgeted 2005 at a Tasa of 37 a year ago got hosed on the way down to 28 so they will surely try to take advantage of it on the way back to 40.

**NOTE** I am not predicting it goes to 40!!

Confusing Rates

There is no "official" rate other than the rate of the central bank.
The rate quoted does not even say whether it's buying or selling, rather useless to me (My guess it's the rate for somebody wanting to buy USdollars).
