If you are not of Dominican origin

and you are a foreigner who visited the dominican republic

and fell in love with this country and you now want to live there,

Or if you are a foreigner who already relocated to the dominican republic,

I invite you to tell me why you love the dominican republic and why you prefer

the dominican republic over your own country of origin?

Replies will be appreciated

Have you checked the blogs on DR1?
They give you an opportunity to read about life here for some of the members that live here.

www.dr1.com/blogs

You are asking a very wide topic.

I have visited the Dominican Republic many times now over the past 5/6 years! I fell in love with the country on my first visit to a A/L. O.k i admit i was in love with the country before really seeing the country because i was resort bound.

Anyway i return many times again and leave the resort to go and explore and meet people (locals) not just resort workers. As i grew up i pursuaded my parents to visit and so he did. Like me he fell in love and they bought a nice house behind the cocaCola factory in POP.

Well.... everything changed... when i stayed there for a period of months i saw the Dominican for what it is and the range of class. The poverty areas, the richer areas, the shanty towns, all these warm friendly people and YES i was more in love with it than ever.

Dominican is a country that people either love or hate and if you love it then it grabs a peice of you that makes you ago back more and more.

Dominicans are the warmest people i have ever met (not sankies) they welcome you into your home and want to learn about you and your cultures. You dont feel judged or 'not' good enough, just completley excepted!

Have you ever been to the Dominincan? im intrigued at this post? Please illaborate!

Thanks x

hello cocacola

Yes I've been to DR. I'm originally from santo domingo. I live in the NY but I go to DR every 4 months. I agree with you that DR has something that keeps you wanting more and more. I'm planning to relocate to Santiago this year.

cocacola do you live in DR ? Where are you from originally?

I came here two years ago on a "temporary" assignement and have recently signed on for two more. I expect I will be asked if I want to extend it a third year and deep in my heart, I see staying beyond that if the opportunity presents itself. Why? Lots of reasons beyond the obvious beauty of the island and its inhabitants. I am amazed daily how genuinely pleasant the people are here. Maybe its because the States have become too sterlile and that is certainly not a concern here.

I agree with Budson...the US is "sterile" compared to the "alive" feeling that you have down there. I am still studying spanish, but I think that the term is "tranquilo" and describes a FEELING...not just a "state of stillness". In the English language, tranquil or tranquility is usually referring to "being still"...and weirder yet is the word "tranquilizer", which means something used (drugs, etc.) to put the body in that state. IMO "Tranquilo" is a more natural feeling of inner peace.

But I have to quickly add that while the US has its flaws...it also has a lot to offer, especially to its citizens. The best things in life occur when you are able to share your culture, whatever it is, with someone else, learn what works and what doesn't work for you, and then go from there...customize. Balance. A very simple, obvious point for me: "home" is snowy and cold, "Second home" is in the Caribbean. Limiting myself to one would make me crazy. But, I know where I can earn more money...and I think that the people who jump on you for asking about starting a business are well-meaning, and just trying to tell you that it's harder to make money there. Someone posted something about the only way to leave the DR with $1million is to arrive in the DR with $2 million. Funny, and true. Also true of the US casinos that I am so fond of...but that is not really relevant to the DR because the whole casino phenom. has not caught on yet there.

I think things have to be put into perspective....I dont think i have fallen IN LOVE with the DR. Certainly one woman there. But there is a pull to the country that i felt before I met her. But the pull was shrouded in the fact that I was ON VACATION...away from issues, work , chores at home!!!! its a great state of mind. people that go there and vacation and wake up late each day and go to bed late every day and shag a different girl or guy each night...and drink as much as they want... and hang out on the beach and take tours.....its a VACATION... and thats the mentality going through your head when you are asked if you would move there!.....it is easy to say that its better than working at home in the usa!! of course it is!

but its not the same thing as living there. If you are retired it may be different. because you can have that life style still. How many times do you get EXCITED to wake up on a monday and head to work?....yeah its different than waking up on vacation!!!!!!!!

many people would say they would love to live in Tahiti after they vacation there...then they realize it can become boring to just hang on the beach your whole life!!!!!!!!! its great as a get away...but not for permanent.

since i dont have the DESIRE to move there "because its the bomb"...I thought I would add my view to the thread....sorry if you ONLY wanted to hear from people that where in the "hell yeah" group

Bob, I agree completely, I live and work here and what you say is right on the mark. I still love it here but I am fortunate to have a job and accommodations a little better than most.

Then again, I haven't fallen in love here so I may not have the entire picture yet.

I'm not sure if I would want to live here year round....

and have to support a family on Dominican wages as that is no longer a concern of mine.
I do enjoy the five to six months of the year we "live' here and look forward to coming back when we are at home in Canada.
We fell in love with the climate, the atmosphere, the friendly people, the carefree lifestyle, the fantastic fresh food, the sea, etc.etc.

I think what impacted us most was how 'content' the people are. They make do with what they have and family and friends are more important that anything else. What little they have, they willingly share with those who 'connect' with them.

I miss my Dominican "family" when I am in Canada......

What do you mean when you say sterlile?

definately america while I have my current job. We can always come down and visit and stay with her family any time we or she wants....working in america and going down to the dr several times a year or more is the best of both worlds I think. until such time as retirement comes along....then maybe move to the dr...maybe

All I can say is you're a stronger man than I am. I just saw earlier the pictures of your girlfriend and all I can say is damn!! If I were to meet a Dominican woman who looked like that, my ass would be living there now! LOL. Now I know what all the talk was about.

Congratulations, and I wish you the best of luck in the future.
