Been to the Dominican twice now and fell in love with it. This question Im sure has been asked before but Im retiring from the Fire Department in about 4 years and am interested in buying or building a home on the North Coast. Can anyone share their experiances with those topics? Thanks a bunch.

Gregg, I didn't know you were planning to move to the DR..... Wait, .... this is not Fireguy, it's Fireguy1. Never mind. :p

Seriously, there have been many threads on both buying properties on the North Coast, as well as ones on building in the DR. Use the search function you should find lots of info.

Another way to get some first hand information would be to take a trip to Sosua, hang out at Rocky's and speak to some of the locals.

Luckily you have lots of time to do your homework and analyze and cross check the advice that people give you.

The usual advice is to come down & rent for 6 months or so before buying but IF you intend buying prior to retiring, then do a LOT of homework. Choose your reator carefully, check your lawyer against the KNOWN RELIABLE ones & make sure you know the area you want to stay in. Sosua, Cabarete, Luperon, Costamber, Cofresi, Puerto Plata or Santigo? Playa Grande is likely to take off fairly soon (& that includes Rio San Juan).

You have a lot of researching to do - so have fun! ~ Grahame.
