Hello,

I'm visitting Cabarete late Feb for a couple of weeks surfing and sunshine. I've been reading through the posts to get some idea of what to expect and am a bit disheartened to read it's not a great destination for women travelling by themselves.

I've travelled a lot on my own, so I don't expect this trip to be any more dangerous than others. Will I really be a target for unwanted attention etc if I'm dining alone?

I reckon I'll meet up with people and will go out with them if I'm up for a night out, but I'm pretty independent and enjoy wandering about on my own.

Fill me please.

Cheers,

Carol

You might want to consider me escorting you. As you can see from this photo I can survive the worst the DR has to offer. Look here: http://dr1.com/media/cgi-bin/media.cgi?action=view&link=Member_Photos&image=chuck1.jpg&img=&tt=

Chuck:

I picked up a really really nice watch at a Compra-Venda in la Romana for RD$1500. That sure is one nice time-piece.

Dear Carol, please don't get us wrong. There are many ways to have a safe and fun vacation alone in the DR. But first you need to think about a few things.

First, you are visiting a country with a different culture. By that I mean precisely that women don't often travel alone. The ones who do, are looking for something - something that you are not looking for. "Bad girls" are out alone, fishing for men and money and trouble. You don't want to be pegged that way, so you don't go alone.

In my experience, in most hispanic cultures, there are two knds of women. "Good girls" have sisters and nieces to travel with. Families always have more fun together. Most Dominicans would find it sad that "you have no-one to go with you."

Second, we don't know how well you speak Spanish. That alone can make or break your independence in a Spanish-speaking country.

Third, I have told single ladies (who speak no Spanish) in search of a dance vacation to think twice. If you plan to go to bars/discos, at night, alone, we need to talk. On the other hand, if you are simply doing day trips, and tucked into bed at night alone - fine.

Lastly, the DR is a safe place for single ladies - once you understand how a single Dominican acts, and how they expect you to act.

I can not speak to Cabarete, but it seems full of many expats who can guide you and perhaps provide company.

Maybe another single lady wants to go to Cabarete and you two can pal around, like good little sisters would?

Sorry for any offense to Feministas, I am just trying to call it as it is.
Ciao - Sam

After looking at the website it seems to me like someone knew you were a good target to run over Chucky baby. Do be more careful, don't be a target wear a 20 watch next time. ;)

I traveled to the Dominican Republic alone in November. I stayed in Cabarete at hotel Villa Taina. It was my first time out of the United States and I was also a little concerned. I am a 36 year old female and speak elementary spanish. I had no problems although it did take me a few days to get adjusted to the pace on the main street and the style of the venders/merchants even on the beach. I took several tours while was there, did many water sports and shopping. I did go out alone at night for dinner and couple nights stayed out later. I had no problems in the 7 days I was there. The people I met in the Dominican Republic were warm and friendly. They were also very patient and willing to help me with my Spanish, although most of their English is very good. I tried to exercise common sense and caution just as you should anywhere.
I had such a wonderful time that not only am I enrolled in a Spanish class now I am retuning in May. I have a friend joining me this time, but would come alone again in a heart beat.
I read this forum almost daily before my trip and It was of more help than all the books I read. I know you will have a wonderful time on your trip.

Please be Careful Carol. I understand you want to travel alone, but sometimes things happen and you don't need to run into danger. A women walking alone at night in DR is unsafe. Many things happen.... If you do wish to visit DR go with a friend.
