If that includes 2 satellite dishes, he's pulling your leg.
He would need at least 2 dishes to get most all the programming you mention.

I have a fair idea how it works, but its been a long day so let me just say don't expect it to work for more than a few months. Those things need to call home to stay active, and "home" has caller ID.

I wonder if anyone has tried this with Vonage or some such service, THAT might be doable...

Mike the OP mentioned that there was no card. That leaves out Direct TV. The only units to my knowledge are Pansat or other similar FTA units that are hacked and can uncrypt Dish programming. Apparently, they are reliable and don't "go down" very often. On the downside, a user would need at least 2 dishes to pick up most of the programming as Dish transmits' on 4 or 5 different satellites. If there is anything else out there, I would appreciate knowing about it.

Let me ad to my original post................

My friend tells me the unit is called "Quantum" and he used to have Direct Dish TV.

The Guy Installed two round things at the end of his dish and after re positioning the Dish, said he will now pick up two sats.

Again he tells me it works like a charm and he gets far more then with the old pirated card.

Yeah I just bought a system like this, still waiting on installation of the 2nd dish. The box got 'zapped' once already (after about 1 month), meaning you have to download new codes to break the scrambling but your satellite provider can do this on your pc in a few mins, you can even learn to do that yourself. This will happen once in a while. The only thing I dont like about this satellite system is that nobody can ever set the right time on the receiver, and the guides never seem to work right, so its hard to know what program is coming on next on which channel. I am sure there is a way to fix that, I just havnt figured it out and my satellite guy just doesnt understand how important that is.

I doubt that any satellite dishes were included in your quote, it sounds like just the price for the cardless receiver.

Originally they wanted to install two LNB's with one dish, however, I have heard that this does not make for good reception and thats much better to have two dishes instead.

Not a scam. What your friend got is more than likely an FTA (Free to Air) Sat. box. Do a little research on the net and you can find out everything you need to know. I am running the same set up in Canada and have a couple of friends in Costambar running it as well.....no problems other than once in a while you have to re-program your box......easy to do and the files to do so are free all over the net. I know that DishNet can be received in the DR....not sure which other sats.

You can start with these sites........

I would really like to know how he can pick up 2 satellites with one dish. In the US or Canada yes http://images.google.com/imgres?img...um=10&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-04,GGLG:en but in the DR?????????
We are on the frindge of the footprint and even with a 6' we sometimes get "clouded" out.

There are quite a few systems outhere, Pansat, Kusat and Viewsat are some brands. Each round thing as described is the LNB (horn) for the satelite pickup.
My own has a Disecq switch in before the receiver that will handle feeds from 4 dishes. I have 3 dishes pointed at different satelites. The beauty of the encrytion program is that it features an autoroller so that when codes are changed within a few minutes usually seconds the receiver finds the new code and saves it within the program.

you can with a double bracket. on a six ft dish there is one bracket for 110 and another bracket attached to the same dish for 119. you point the dish at 119 and the other bracket is designed to point to 110.

Does this work in the DR? Did you have to slant you dish? If so at what angle? PM me if you rather not post it.

Sat System

I just bought the system here in POP. It cost me $32,000 pesos installed and included the dish, LNBs, switches, receiver, and cables. I only have ONE dish and the two LNBs are mounted to the same tri-bar. So far I've only lost the signal once, and that was immediately before the Superbowl. The picture is usually very good with the normal disruptions due to heavy rain. Reprogramming the box is fairly simple if you have a good internet connection.

If you are on the North Coast, send me private note and I'll forward on the contact info for the guy I bought the system from.
