If it is a residencial apartment, rented out by the landlord, you pay 1 rent and 1-2 deposits when moving in.
A contract is signed at a lawyer in this case, usually the landlord has one, and the renter pays the lawyers fee.

If you rent by a landlord who rents out furnished apartments in a house as a living, you usually just pay the monthly rent in advance and pay upon a monthly basis. Nothing more. It is simular to hotel-apartments, and no contracts etc are signed.
