I'm curious as to why no mention has been made about the burglaries/attempted burglaries at El Neptuno in Sosua. Maybe someone on DR1 could help come up with new security measures.

Are you referring to the "C" Building?

If so, it may have something to do with locking the patio door and/or the "Company" involved.

I spent a month in the Neptuno Complex and have ZERO security issues.

Juan should have a daytime partner to watch the front while he is doing construction IMHO.

As ugly as they are, the lower floors should be "gated" somehow.

Good points about Juan and the gates. I'm sure El Neptuno will be implementing new security measures soon.

Which "burglaries/attempted burglaries" were you referring to?
Don't worry it won't drive the prices down!

I haven't heard of any buglaries at Neptuno. One purse snatching incident that's all. Don't live there but have several friends that do.

Unaccounted for snatch appears to be a rampant syndrome around here lately.

Within the past couple of weeks we had an experience that others may well benefit from. A couple of young, nicely dressed young men have gone around posing as employees and pretending they were looking for someone. Susceptible to this are the tenants who do not know who all theemployees If they were shabby, people would have been immediately on guard. But these two young men were nicely dressed in the style of their age and very polite.

The first time they were here, they went to several apartments but nobody let them in. Well, that isn't quite right because my wife let them in, thinking they were with the contractor who was in the apartment at the time because he had some helpers coming and going, but the contractor said they weren't with him and immediately sent them on their way.

The young men then found a way to get into an unoccupied ground floor apartment and gathered together some tv and computer accessories, but were frightened off by the maid putting a key in the door so she could go in before the next tenant arrived. She found the box with the items in it, but the young men had left empty handed.

Then at the end of last week they returned. We are quite sure it was the same two because they used the same MO, going to at least two different apartments, holding out a note with a name written on it, and pretending they were employees looking for the person. One of the apartments they went to was occupied by a visitor with a fractured ankle. The visitor speaks pretty good Spanish and has had very good experiences whenever she has visited and has positive feelings about all Dominicans. When they rang the bell of the apartment she was in, she hobbled over on crutches, opened the door and allowed them in. However, she said she didn't know who they were looking for and told them to go to the office. The young men left.

Very soon thereafter the bell rang again and the woman, suspecting it was the same two, stayed in her chair and asked who it was. The young men said nothing. Instead, they tried the door, found it open, and walked in. The woman had not locked the door after the young men left.

This time they pretended they were with the police looking for drugs and claimed that a recent renter had drugs in the apartment. During the course of the convesation, they noticed the woman had a small purse under one leg. They grabbed it and left, with the approximately RD$2,000 that was in the purse.

As a result of the first incident, El Neptuno ordered photo ID badges for the employees. They were delivered the day of the 2nd incident so had not yet been given to the employees. They have them now and a copy of these ID's is also being posted on a bulletin board so that all residents have a chance to see what all employees look like, even those that work mainly at night. When working the employees will wear the badges around the neck and all residents have been instructed not to let anybody in who does not have an ID, no matter what story they give.

Long before we had these two experiences, the board of directors, which I am on, has been studying ways we might improve security and have sent to all owners a long list of options that will be discussed at the Assembly in March.

One good thing that has come from this is that our owners are now much more receptive to some needed improvements in security than they were previously. Unless you live here, you don't really appreciate the fact that it is more necessary now than it was a few years ago to take a close look at possible security measures.

The only thing is, no security measures in the world are going to protect you if you do foolish things like inviting strangers into your house.
