For my second trip, I will be traveling to the DR this week and will attend La Vega Carnaval on Sunday. Next year I was considering traveling to Brazil and checking out the carnaval celebrations over there with a few of my friends. Just wanted to get some thoughts from those that have visited both carnavals. What are the main differences?

Brazil 1991, I visited both the Rio and Olinda street carnival. All I can say is outstanding!

I visited the La Vega carnival in 2002/3. No comparison to the Brazilian events. I had fun, but not even close to scale of the Brazilian carnivals I visited. Maybe things have changed now in Brazil, but back in 1991, carnival was amazing!

The pre-carnival parties in Rio are a must event if you get invited.
Especially the barrio parties held by most of the samba schools competing in the carnival. Back in 1991 you didn't see very many tourists at the parties, unlike the main parade which is more of an event for tourists than Brazilians.

If you can go to both, do it. Life is about living and carnival certainly helps you live life ;)
