Solar pool pumps is a great way to filter the pool. Solar panels totalling
about 450 watts are required. The pump can also be operated by a genset
via an AC power pack (optional). A pool pump controller & DC disconnect come with the package. For medium or larger pools this system will not
be sufficient to provide pool cleaning by vaccum hose & sweeper. In this
case, a self driven pool cleaner may be considered or a separate booster
pump. The self driven pool cleaner is robotic and comes with a 115 VAC to
24 VDC transformer, rated at approx 255 watts. Fully automated, this
cleaner programs it self into the pool pattern and completes the job in
about 5-6 hours. A combination of solar pump - self driven cleaner eliminates
the need to run 220 VAC genset daily to service the pool. This set-up
saves tons of fuel, emmisions & noise. Payback estimated at 3 years.

Would 18 feet x 38 feet be considered a mediun to larger pool? Also, what do you think is the approximate difference in the initialprice and setup costs? - D

Solar pool pump economics

On average a typical diesel genset consumes 1 gallon fuel = 12 kw.
12 kw will operate an AC pump for about 6 hours.

1 gallon diesel cost 90 pesos. Add 25% losses & maintenance to genset.
Final cost to run an AC pool pump at 112 pesos/day or 40,880 pesos/year.
Converted to $US at +/- 30 pesos = $US 1,362 per year x 4 years = $5,450

Solar pool pump systems sell for about $US 5,500. Lifetime of pump 10 years.
Lifetime of solar panels over 20 years.

Lifetime of a 18 kw diesel genset at 1800 RPM is 10,000 to 15,000 hrs.
When running at 6 hours daily the projected lifetime is 5.7 years.

Conclusion.

Solar pool pumping initial cost is "high" but on the long run (10 years)
will pay for it self twice. In addition, it operates clean & silent.

Medium size pools are:
1. 29 - 33 feet long
2. 13 - 14 feet wide
3. 3 - 6 feet deep (varies)

An 18 x 38 feet pool is a large pool.

Solar pool pumps can be connected parallel to existing AC pumps which now
become back-up pumps. Just about anyone can install 4 solar panels but
allow 2 hours of electrical work. Total cost should not exceed $6,000.
