From DR1 News

According to Listin Diario, the Police Chief says that the crime rate in the DR is still the lowest in Latin America. He said that there is an average of five homicides per day, in a country with a population of around 9 million people.

A rate of 1,825 a year is 20.27 per 100,000.

Compare:

El Salvador at 128 per 100,000
Guatemala at 61 per 100,000
Honduras at 43 per 100,000.
Costa Rica, 8.8 per 100,000
Mexico 14
Argentina 4.5
Chile 3.1
and...Nicaragua suffers only 3.1 per 100,000, making it the least violent country in Central America and one of the safest in all both hemispheres.

So it is not all that safe and for 9 million nearly 2,000 murders is a huge rate.

DEFINITION: Total recorded intentional homicides, completed. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. Per capita figures expressed per 1,000 population.

This comes from: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_mur_percap

Also, keep in mind that homicide rates (at least those collected in DR) make NO distinction between homicides due to crime activities and extra judicial killings by police, which as we all know, is a common thing during demonstrations and in poorer neighborhoods.

It's not fair to bring up Canada like that, if you want to kill somebody you usually have to find them first and Canada is just too cold, better to send them a nasty email and try your best to hold a grudge 'till springtime.

Nals, extra judicial killings by police is a homicide in my book. Do you really think if the killer is a policeman makes the crime something correct? Or are you saying if the dead was a criminal then the killing doesnt count?...

the problem with these statistics is that they very raw data....yes those people are dead, but if you want to worry about where to live. defining how these people are dying is important to knowing the true percentage you may get murdered there.

soooo I would guess that the murder rate in DC of people of lower middle class incomes and up who do not have any criminal record...would be in the range of 75% less than the murder rate for all people there.

I believe these murders are at least 50% drug related, and are most often criminal on crinimal crimes. And then after that a large percentage will be domestic family homicides where strangers would not be in danger. It is amazing how many times we read about people who have killed their children.

I bet the economy plays a huge role in that the health of the workforce drives the murder rate up and down..

where in the DR the economy may not fluctuate as much( thats just my guess) America is very dynamic and has many more resources for stimulating income or people back to work, both public and private. The DR doesnt seem to have things like that to stimulate the workforce.

I know that any criminal getting sent BACK to the DR from jail in america wont be happy and may not have a place to fit in. Those people will be prime to jump right into crime to make ends meet... and even worse to try and make ends meet like they used to in america! That doesnt bode well for the DR.

I also agree that some of these "statistic" we read include things like criminals getting killed by police in the line of their duty. and drunk drivers , and justifiable homicides( self defense)....

I think

I think that the statistics would average oput to be about the same. We all agree that this country has a much higher level of poor and a much poorer poor than the 1st world. It is admirable that the statistics dont reflect that isn;t it?

I think if you place 9 Million more Detroiters (is that the right name?) in this situation the rate would be MUCH higher than 20...............

I think Oh Contraire. the DR economy is a wild ride ! I bought cement on friday last week for 80 Pesos. today I paid 105 After negotiations! prices reflect our instability and dependance on imports. Cement prices are up because construction has gone wild and supply and demand blah blah blah .
GNP growth fluctuates wildly from year to year and the inflation rate is like a thermometer travelling from toronto to SDQ. Tourists flock then dont flock.......

The only thing that seems to stay consistant is Dominican salaries ! And they aer Small to say the least.

I think the DR rates are even worse as only what, 2 million -3 million are in Santo Domingo and the rest in smaller cities and very small and rural areas and they have big city homicide rates nationally. The point being that the Police Cheif was blowing smoke up the people's collective a$$ with these figures, no big surprise I suppose.

A valid argument except Nicaragua is just about the poorest Latin American country yet manages to have a homicide rate 1/7th of the DR with less per capita GDP and less per capita everything really. Small army, small police force, fewer per capital prisoner population as well. Can't blame bad behaviour on poverty all the time.

Agreed. Maybe they cant afford machetes?

nevertheless , Detroit and Baltimore and nashville are citys with super opportunities but they are double Dominican rates. And I think that Jamaica must be comparable in living conditions and economy? They are 150% of the good ole DR.

Thanks for your post Rick because it gave me an opportunity to show that American cities really arent that much safer than here. I see all the cautions and warnings and Paranoia and I cringe. Yes caution, But the same as most cities,. I would love to find out statistics of crimes against Expats and tourists here in D.R. ( Outside of the Overcharging and selling of junk jewllery) . Many tourists get murdered here? or Expats? be gentle I am still relatively new here and still on my learning curve though it is starting to flatten out !

They have lots of machetes. Just a less mercenary attitude I guess. They are far more approachable (*)and nicer than Dominicans, regardless of walk in life, I have found. I think the head DR cop should not lie to the masses.

(*) Thank Ed, a valuable correction to clarify this mysterious word.

I suppose it is all mute, we will all pick and choose countries and compare to prop up our point of view. I guess my only point was that we judge DR based on the visuals. In reality its not as bad as some and worse than others. I can live with that .

jerryme is quite a sad case really. Too bad that the mentally ill cannot do better in society.

Note to Tamborista when the legendary coach of Notre Dame said it, it would be a Knute Point.

The best cambio in Cabarete is in Sosua!
Unless another member adives otherwise, I do not know of a Cambio in Cabarete that does not utilize "mafioso tactics" and pay 2 RD Pesos under the current Tasa! The new Casino actually gave me a real rate, good luck!

Yes, AMEX cheques are fine in USD

I interpret the phrase "I suppose it is all mute" to mean that the issue is so obvious that it doesent need to be expressed with speech.

However, if you meant to say: "I suppose it is all moot", then the meaning is reversed, since it suggests that the issue is still unresolved, still defensible in argument.

Which one is it?
