From DR1 News
According to Listin Diario, the Police Chief says that the crime rate in the DR is still the lowest in Latin America. He said that there is an average of five homicides per day, in a country with a population of around 9 million people.
A rate of 1,825 a year is 20.27 per 100,000.
Compare:
El Salvador at 128 per 100,000
Guatemala at 61 per 100,000
Honduras at 43 per 100,000.
Costa Rica, 8.8 per 100,000
Mexico 14
Argentina 4.5
Chile 3.1
and...Nicaragua suffers only 3.1 per 100,000, making it the least violent country in Central America and one of the safest in all both hemispheres.
So it is not all that safe and for 9 million nearly 2,000 murders is a huge rate.
