Does anyone know of a good bar in the Colonial Zone or Gazcue (or somewhere close by) that has a large screen TV where I can escape to watch Yankee games and have a beer this baseball season?

Watching the games in English would be a nice plus too but I wont be greedy :).

After 5 months your still not comfortable with Spanish? Or do you just want to hear Michael Kay's voice?

Very good question.

There is a large TV screen in the Jaragua Casino. They usually have ESPN on (or baseball games on). But since it is so noisy inside the casino, you cannot hear the TV.

Does anyone know a better place?

P.S. GO RED SOX!!! ;) :bunny:

It certainly won't be quiet, but it's the best bet to get your fix. You'll likely get the US feeds - so they'll be in English - but it won't do you any good.

The banging of dominoes, the clanging of grandes and the endless arguing and banter of bettors will leave you to watching only.

It's quite a party atmosphere, I loved it. You can also practice bad spanish for free!

I was always treated very well, and never shunned in conversation - there really isn't anything funnier (apparently) than me debating baseball in Spanglish. They'd always ask what I was betting, because I was leaving with money - post grandes!! (Simple hint: always bet against Pedro - they jack up his lines to absurd levels b/c the locals always bet on him, it's like free money).

It's also where I learned to properly say "diablo co?o" and do the Dominican hand-wash motion - one of my favorite take-aways.

On Independencia, above the former stabbin' cabin' of Scandall's, there's a banca with an extensive (illegal) cable feed, reserve power and plenty of TV's. Cheap beer too.

I didn't get to live in the high-fallutin' neighborhood you now live in, but I'm sure a sports banca can't be far away.

Other than that, Al Gore's new invention - MLBTV.com - is the other good alternative. I'm fortunate enough to get it the Dominican way - free - but I'm sure whatever the price is, you'll love it.

You can get either the home or away broadcast (the announcers) and the radio feed as well. I put it full-screen on the monitor and it's not bad at all.

You will only run into blackouts when it's a Fox Sat/Sun broadcast, plus a few others, but those are the days you'll be able to go to the Jaragua, or if 5-star is still around - to the west of the Jaragua - you'll likely get it there.

I never found the Jaragua sports pit to be a Yankee friendly environment.

First. . . . .switch to being a Mets fan. . . .they will be on TV more often;-) Every time Pedro pitches, the Mets will be on in every colmado in the country. If by some remote stroke of luck, Jose Lima also makes the team. . . . .

Seriously the jaragua is a good choice. Go to champions and ask them to tune in the yankee game. Ask rafael who is asst manager, if the yankee game is on. Tell him you are a friend of "rafael" the whacky "gringo con la cola" and he'll hook ya up. . . . .if the game is available on their system.

No big screen TVs but they have a bunch of TVs so they can have multiple games etc.

If the yankees are on regular cable and ya want to see it on a big screen, head to beer house. If ya wanna more hooters type scene try Eagles. . . .

but once again. . . . .you can soon jump on the band wagon and become a Mets fan!

BTW. . .I'll be in gazcue early friday night, so maybe we'll bump into each other. . . .beer is on me!

OK, I just rolled out of bed a little while ago but how was that??

Cliff...thanks for all the info. Al Gores new invention....lmao. That was a good one. I was thinking about subscribing to MLB.com. I probably will.

Rafeal...drop me a line if you are in Gazcue and want to get a drink.

It is not that bad. But you better watch it in english :D BTW, I have seen big screens with baseball games in Beer House. There is also a bar (if it is still in business) besides Camelot, I think it is sports related. But, as someone has said before, in bars and casinos there is so much noise that you will only be watching the game, no Michael Kay's voice.

You better find someone with cable/satellite TV to catch the english speaking signal of ESPN :)

Good luck

Jess

Ni yo tampoco Rellosko. Dime algo....te vas a jugar en el turneo de poker en Marzo en Cabarete?? Yo quiero conocerte por alla.

I am sure all the native Spanish speakers are laughing at their monitors but at least I am trying:glasses:

Not going to happen

No offense Rafael, but the Jaragua sucks for going to watch a baseball game; futball, super bowl, maybe. But they have only the basic TV package in the bar, and if you're going to have to sit in the banca (at jaragua) you're far better off going to your local sports banca - more benefits methinks.

Same with the beer house. If it's playoffs, a big weekend game, yeah, you might get it there or at the Jaragua, but you may even get it on your home TV for that matter, or any colmado.

If you can spare the up-front coin, MLBTV is the way to go. All that you want, plus the "condensed game" or "highlights" if you're not able to watch it live.

Honrun!

I saw a lot of Yankee games at the Jaragua Casino. I wish they had more Red Sox games.

Pedro and the Mets visit Fenway Park in late June. As a Red Sox fan, I am going to cheer for Pedro. He helped bring a championship to Boston.

Five Star is a good place to go - they have satellite so no problem getting the games, and their food is decent and the beer is cheap, esp. for a nice place.

They have so many TVs though they don't have the volume going on them as the place would be a madhouse. If it is a quiet time in the bar they will turn up the volume on one of the TVs in the back for you if you ask nicely. They did this for me for college football games anyway.
