I was wondering if anybody has any information or knowledge on the history of bullfighting in the Dominican Republic. Was it ever practice? If so, why is not longer practice?
There was a post in the recent cockfighting thread that said that the Americans had banned bullfighting and cockfighting during the 1916 invasion, and that after they left only cockfighting resumed.
The closest thing I have found is watching the bullfights at Plaza Mexico on Telecable Channel 31 every Saturday from 2 pm to 4 pm. What a great way to spend the afternoon!
The fiestas patronales in El Seibo, 1st and 2nd week of May, include a tribute to the bullfighting tradition with no picks or swords, just the cape and suit of lights. Any real violence is that which befalls the brave/optimistic young bullfighters. The bulls are real and large and often quite skillful.
