Ok... so again, my parents just came back from the DR. They were told that everyone gets or has a "watch dog". I found this strange but it seems to be custom according to what they were told. Is this true and what types of dog are used?

it is common for people to have watch dog, but I would not say that everyone has one. I have seen pit bulls, german shephards as watchdogs. These are mostly at homes where the owners are not around the house very much. I have not seen any watchdogs in the rich neighborhoods, they have a guacheman and nice gate instead.

The best and cheapest guard dog often ends up being the viralatas (streetdogs). Purebreds are often more delicate and sensitive to food and disease. I would say it depends on personal taste. As to having guard dogs, Dominicans in general are afraid of dogs. When they're kids their parents are always saying, be careful, the dog's going to bite you!
