Hi,

I appologize if this has been posted over and over again, but I couldn't find a way to search previous posts.

Well, I'm going to Santiago and I'm looking for all hotels in the area that are clean, reasonably priced, and have a pool. If I were traveling alone I'd be satified with staying at the Colonia, but this time I'm bringing my 18 month old son and 6 year old daughter to meet thier greatgrandmother. Being that Santiago is so far away from the coast a pool will be essential for the kids....and my sanity!

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure what your budget is, but this Hotel has a pool.

To find other thread where Santiago Hotels are discussed, click on Search in the taskbar above. Entering the words "Santiago Hotel" will bring up some recent threads.

The only two hotels with a pool are the Gran Almirante and the Matum (UGH)

I think you would be better off in a nice place where it is safe and fairly quiet, and take the kids to the water park on Ave Hispa?iola. If your grandmother or mon are members of either Gurabito Country Club or the Centro Espa?ol, then you can swim there.

let me ask a question... about 3.5 years ago in the summer time I came to the DR and spent one night in a hotle that was next to a casino in santiago. I think it was the exact same place as the gran almirante , because I think i remember the elevated highway close by.

was the gran almirante rebuilt or refurbished int he last 3.5 years?

because the hotel i satyed at was kinda dingy..ie carpets in the big hallways were torn and dirty. I think i remember someone mentioning that it was some type of headquarters for the US forces in the area when they came into this country in the early 60's. Is this the same hotel...because it is totally different now. I ate in the resturant last fall so i know the isides are different by a long shot.

thanks

The Courtyard, which is scheduled to open up in June, will also have a pool.

I'm surprised the Matum hasn't been taken over and renovated, it's in a very strategic area, it could be turned into something really elegant, my brother celebrated his wedding there in '94 very nice. I've been to the club, a weekday and it was my friend and I and like 3 other couples in the whole place, that was a few years ago so from the responses here it looks like its still going downhill.

I'd say that the only thing that place has going is the casino. I always pass by there on my trips and the only action I see is the people going into the casino.

M.A.R. and others: About the Matum.

What you should know is that Ulises Polanco, the "arrendatario" of the Hotel Matum since the mid 60s has renovated the place from time to time, but currently he is not doing much for it. And there is nobody breaking down the door with enough political clout to get the government to break its contract with Polanco. The various hotels (Santiago, Samana,Santiago Rodriguez,Constanza and maybe other I don't know about) make up the CorpHotel that belongs to the Corporaci?n de Empresas Estatales (Used t be called CORDE). They all belonged to Trujillo (now do you begin to understand why 65? of every peso spent in the DR went into his pockets??), and were rented out to political favorites during the first governments following his (Trujillo's ) downfall (assassination)...:p:p

There are only two hotels advertised in Santiago, which is really not a good thing since your options are limited. I am also trying to find a place to stay in Santiago and I am not having any luck finding anything. I'm looking for an aparta hotel or an apartment to rent short term. Can anyone help me??
Suggestions?????

Mari8877: Well, there are more, that's for sure. Platino, Gran Almirante are bothon Estrella Sadhal?. Aloha Sol is on calle del Son, and there is a small hotel connected to the Gran Almirante, that used to be called Santiago Camino Real, and then there is the Colonial. soon there will be a marriot Courtyard and the Hotel Gran Santiago Convention Center and Casino...

When do you need this habitation? Apartments are difficult for short term rentals. There is Aparta Suites Alberto, which might, just might be what you need. Alberto's Aparta Suites Hotel is the right name.
Located on Vicente Estrella Street in Los Pepines sector of Santiago.
Tel809 971 6005. I have heard good things from people that have stayed there. You might give them a call.
