I know you can get checking accounts here in pesos, and savings accounts in dollars, but can you get a checking account in dollars? If so, which bank?

I recently opened a bank account at Bank Leon with US Dollars and in US Dollars. It also allows me to check online to see activity, deposits, etc. The only downside (for me) is the site is in Spanish and I don't read let alone speak it. There are people at the bank, however, who are fluent in English.

Hope this helps.

One can use one's US checks here.
Not to pay at the supermarket but to exchange the currency.
Once you have established a trusted transaction relationship with a few "casas de cambio" you are OK.
Thus you can avoid the Dominican banking system which not always is sheer delight.

I found out the answer. NO. You can only have dollar SAVINGS accounts. Checking accounts only come in pesos.

Perhaps Not True

I was recently handed a Banco Popular check in dollars. It was payable through Morgan Bank in NY, but it was written right here in Puerto Plata.

However, I am not certain if it was drawn on a checking account, or withdrawn from a savings account.
