Hertell praises Customs Dept
The United States government is satisfied with Miguel Cocco's management of the Customs Department, according to Ambassador Hans Hertell. The institution has become one of the most "transparent and efficient" of its kind in the hemisphere, said the diplomat. Cocco's collaboration has been critical to prepare this country for entry into the DR-CAFTA agreement, though there are still some legal and procedural issues that have to be completed for the treaty to come into effect. However, Hertell is optimistic that the treaty will begin on July 1st as planned. Diario Libre reports that the ambassador made these comments during the opening ceremony of the BASC Dominicana offices at the Customs Department headquarters. BASC is a private sector initiative promoting trade in products that comply with international standards, and prevents smuggling, drug trafficking and terrorism. It works in coordination with the US Customs Department.

Has anyone noticed if the customs department become more "transparent", or is it the same as it's always been?
