On a sleepy Saturday afternoon - Censorship

A recent comment from a regular DR1 poster made me think that we have not discussed an old topic yet this year. From time to time the DR1 gets flak because of its supposed "censorship". This comment came up again quite recently in a private discussion and I thought it would make a good thread.

Do you think the DR1 is censored and if so what is censored and why?

Undies in a bunch

In my experience it occurs when posters have an agenda that flames into a ****ing contest that evolves into a "meet me at the flagpole after gym class and I'm going to kick your ass..." thing.

I didn't befriend too many principals in school, but they made a big difference and are entirely necessary.

This space would be a spitball factory otherwise. We all share a similar passion and get jilted when our neighbors don't like our laundry hanging in their "Windows".

I don't like everything CC says, but the streaks in his dirty underwear make me laugh uncontrolably and they can hang in my Windows anytime. It seems I'm upwind of them, because downwind there sure is a lot of complaining. Unlike many agendas that spring up from Connecticut to the Florida panhandle his experience is paid for in pesos.

My thoughts

I don'T know first hand if it is or not. However, I feel strongly that no censorship should be taken because how would one know the personality, the political stance, the true and underlying feelings of a poster behind the anonymity of the keyboard. Granted this sometimes gives the poster an added dimension to their lives, but for the most part when you read a person's postings for a length of time you know where he is coming from.
Take the case of CC.If he was censored how would anyone get a feel about this man and what he thinks about women, putas, costs of getting laid in the DR vs. the US?
Or, the posters that always defend the DR no matter what.Would it be right to censor or stop them from taking this stance.
As I write this I am reminded of one tread several months ago that should have been censored and was not. That's the one where the poster suggested the Cardinal should (something like) "go suck bla bla bla "
This was truely out of line and I don't recall, correct me if I am wrong, that even a post this strong was censored.

Cleef, I think you and Cris Colon in one room will make the rest of us **** our pants with laughter.

Besides your comments and Johne's comments, there are a few other 'censored' categories that I'm aware of. Spam, trying to blackball a business or a person and not having irrefutable proof of wrongdoing, kiddie sex trolls, and sometimes the insane, unless they are really funny in which case most everybody has a go at some unfortunate uncensored soul, and I almost forgot, sockpuppets. Those who consistently talk bad about the board, but then try to sneak in under another name and use the board's benefits.

A last comment, cris colon was 'censured' plenty... he became a mod to try and keep him under control as he was simply incorrigible. The thread is here somewhere around four years ago and it was a funny one....

Sure the board is censored, but Robert makes that clear up front. We know from the start that if we get into arguments on religion, race, etc., we are going to be cut off. Likewise we know the censor is going to get us if we spam the board or if we advertise.

There needs to be control on a message board, and every board I know has rules about what you can post and what you can't. That control is a form of censorship, but it is necessary.

Chris, just posted and saw yours below. Apparently we were writing at the same time, but you clicked the button ahead of me.

An open site such as this could well attract a wierd bunch of folks if there was no controls in place. If you want to say sh!t or pi$$, there are ways around it that the automatic controls will let pass, but i think that if a poster uses these wonderful words for more than humor or shock value they tend to lower one's estimation of the poster's mentality. While scatological has its place in humor, there are some limits.

So please do censor, and on with the show!!

I remember a couple of years ago when some guy was looking to find out about kiddie porn in the DR supposedly. I have no clue on how to find the thread but I do know that SOB got blasted off this site immediately.

So yes - we censor and moderate and will continue to do so. If not then weirdos like that would have a field day here.

Oh oh.
Look out Apostropheman.
He loves those bunnies.
And with regards to censoring, censor away.
If I ever feel I don't like it, I can just go away.
I don't come onto DR1 to get grossed out or peed off.
If nobody was controlling this board, I wouldn't be enthusiastic about looking at it 10 times a day, as I now do.

Chris:

Since I brought it up in a private message to you, and you were kind enough to create a new thread on the topic, here are my thoughts.

I think "tasteful moderation" is welcome by most contributors to this message board, including myself. The term Censorship is indeed a bit harsh, and yes I used it!

When the moderators/webmaster delete or close threads to suit their own needs, that is another story.

I understand this is a privately owned website and one must play by the rules.

I agree with you. But there are many times posts and threads are deleted or closed on the whim of the moderator/webmaster, rather than because of the violation of a rule.
