In Mexico, there is a type of restaurant called "cocina economica" which serves fast, simple, inexpensive meals for locals. I was wondering if this type of restaurants can be found in the DR.

Yes, all over the place - usually known as 'comedores populares' and sometimes 'fondas'. They serve the plato del día which is rice, beans, meat/chicken/fish and salad.

In santiago:

Multicentro Salvador (av. bartelome colon near old airport)
El encanto (2rd floor): calle restauracion with corner san luis)
mana: calle francia with corner calle del sol
Pollo provocon IV: restauracion with corner sabana larga (excellent freshly cooked chicken over charcoals)
If you go further down on sabana larga from there (one way street) you will find another good cafeteria type place on left hand right after crossing independencia av.
There are many places with plato del dia type offers and the food is always fresh and simple.

The common price in Puerto Plata is 70-80 pesos. Maybe slightly higher in the big cities, slightly less in the country.

Under a hundred pesos (US$3).

About 10 kilometers outside Jarabacoa, on the road entering the small village of Buena Vista, there is "Comedor Mariana" that offers a choice of meals for the modest price of $70 pesos. Mariana offers a choice of chicken, beef, or pork, white rice, habichuela beans, and salad, all packed in a white foam container for carry out.

In Constanza you get "El Plato del Dia" for 60 pesos or 2 dollars. Real clean, with their produce coming straight from their fields- onions, papas,

Salvador is no more. he has closed it down. the food was kinds ???, anyway.

Tiriguillo on Constanza between 27 de Febrero and J.P. Duarte, across from the Banco del Caribe** parking lot. Good everything and ice cold beers

In the evenings, Tu Pizza (8 slices for RD$200) in the parking lot of that bank.

** Banco del Caribe. Moved from under the urban blight known as the Elevado. In the new building, it looks like a bank, not some Bowery betting parlour.

Okay so now that we established that these places exist, where in Sosua would I find some?

The best "comedor" in Sosua is Susana's next to the Plaza Alegria in the Pedro Clisante. It is about 50 m from Banco del Progreso.

Susana offers a huge variety of pork, beef, fish and chicken with different types of rice, platanos etc. The prices are from RD$ 80-120 per meal and her food is just delicious.

In the capital I heartily recommend Mesa Bonita, on Ave. Independencia, a couple of blocks from the Presidente factory. The cross street is called Plan Piloto.

The plato del día is from RD$75. They're open in the evenings too, for grilled food - parillada.

Geez, they're giving it away.
That is a price that is in excess of three hours pay to typical Dominican worker. (typical office or store employee, teacher, etc.)
