Moving to Jarabacoa from the US

Living in Jarabacoa six months a year

1. How many hours per day do you have electricity in Jarabacoa?

2. What's the difference between an "inversor" and a "generador"? What about the cost?

3. Is it too difficult to find an apartment for rent in Jarabacoa?? Any long-term aparthotels or other type of long-term (6 months) accomodation?

4. Can you get high-speed internet access in Jarabacoa?? How fast? What company?

5. Any laundromats in Jarabacoa?

Thank you

Bullschitt!
Jarabacoa has electricity. However, they also experience periodic blackouts like the rest of the country.
An "inversor" is a power inverter which consists of a unit that is essentially a battery charger when there is electricity and then a DC->AC power inverter for when the lights go off. They come in all sizes from .5kw to 3.5 kw.
Their main use is to keep your computer from going off, and allowing you to have lights for television and fans...
However, they are a bit complicated and require maintenence for the batteries, and they are not perfect. You also need a voltage regulator on your system.

Generators are just that, often called gensets. They, too, come in all sizes, and use gasoline, propane and diesel, depending on the brand, size and requirements.
These have to be hooked up to the house's electric system in such a way that you don't start trying to light up the rest of the neighborhood!! :(
Medium to medium large installations will have an automatic transfer that turns on the genset as soon as it detects a fall in the electricity system. (usually a 4-5 second delay, so you would need a UPS system for your computer, too). There is also a delay when the electricity comes back on, since the transfer box has to be sure the lights are really back on before shutting down the genset.

Sorry, I am not familiar with Jarabacoa real estate, but maybe you could send a PM to "Bob Saunders" who, I understand, lives there. I doubt if there are laundromats in Jarabacoa, but there are nice women that do washing and ironing. You shouldn't have much of a problem with that.

Good Luck,

Luis

Another thought (Good to know that there is a laundromat, thanks Windeguy!)...

You might want to contact by PM a poster known here as "drtampa"...he has done a lot of research on Jarabacoa and spent time there looking around. he may well be a solid source of info. Try him.
