I got Seguros Universal, through Banco Popular. It covers 100% up to $1,000,000 US per person for all non-ambulatory (overnight stay) care, including bringing the patient to the US or other country. I found that the normal ambulatory care was inexpensive enough not to require insurance. It coast me $1,866 for the mother and 2 children. - D

Sounds a little steep.I was hearing quotes of 600-800 US anual fees.Any other options anyone can recommend?

From a previous post I made. The current premium is RD $570/month. If not through a group you would have to pay premium full year in advance instead of monthly.

Currently I am covered by ARS PAlic Salud. Single coverage costs RD$540/month. Covers Hospital and Inpatient Charges 100%, Doctor visit w/50 co-pay, 80% prescriptions up to RD$3,000/year, 80% Dental, 80% Outpatient Lab and X-Ray, 100% Emergency Room, etc. Maximum coverage is RD$300,000/year. I recently was in Centro Medical Bournigal for 5 days and my total out-of-pocket cost was RD$300 for services not covered. Although RD$300,000 is not a great deal of coverage in case of a major illness, I figure it would be adequate until I could arrange transport back to the US.

I'm paying about $600 per person. I'd be curious to hear more details about other policies.

It's important to know why you want the insurance. My sole reason is to cover catastrophic situations, and I never want my loved ones to be denied the best treatment. - D

I think you will find the US$ 600/year per person correct as both of the Dominican policies we have had charged the full premium for each of the primary, spouse and first two dependants before it discounted for additional dependants.

Make sure

Make sure , that whoever you are buying is well accepted in the Clinicas and Hospitals. You can pay cheap but have to travel miles to get service which is covered by the policy .

i pay about 500 US a year for my wife and I (I pay 5200 PESOS Quarterly) .........We are well covered with Seguro Universal. I forget the Plan that I bought but it covers 85 to 90 % of almost everything.
Health care here is cheap. And Insurance is still cheap too.
Santo Domingo # is 809-544-7750

We have had excellent experience with them here on the North Coast.
We also use them for Car and House and Life !

On the North Coast, do you still have to go to Puerto Plata to sign up for Seguros Universal or can it be done in a local office of Banco Popular?

The only office is in Puerto Plata, but there is an office in Sosua that funtions as a general office that services many businesses which can accept payments and documents for Seguros Universales. You cannot use a bank branch. - D
