I have been looking into taking the overnight Ferry from Santo Domingo, DR to Mayaguez, PR. Has anyone done this?

Right now, it looks to be about $350 less for two people to take the Ferry roundtrip rather than fly American Airlines. That is for a sleeping cabin. According to:

www.hispaniola.com/dominican_republic/info/travel_puerto_rico.php

www.ferriesdelcaribe.com

Also, does anyone know how much is ground transport would be to get from Mayaguez, PR to San Juan, PR?

Windeguy,

I took my family about two years ago. We live in Cabarete, so we drove to the Capital, left our car with some friends, took the ferry overnight (sleeper cabin). We rented a car with Hertz(I think) at the Mayaguez airport (which is near the docks) and drove to San Juan. I had gotten a very nice hotel with Priceline and we stayed several days and came back the same way.
It was a nice trip, the kids loved the ferry and we were pleased with the service. I don't really remember the prices that much, but let me know if you want any more info and I'll try to remember or ask my wife (who probably will remember).

The best place for body surfing would probably be Playa Encuentro...there's a small sign on the highway. Its about 2-3 miles before the center of Cabarete, if you're heading from Sosua. It's where most of the traditional surfers go. There are decent waves on all of the Cabarete beaches, but theyre really known for the windsurfing and kitesurfing.

I Lived and work in Puerto rico but i currently bought in Casa de campo! But anyways with my work i find myself coming to the D.R la capital every month sometimes twice a month ! I find the ferry to be very costly there are flights from the D.R in Air Santo Domingo and american eagle that are sometimes cheaper and drop you off in San Juan. Allot of people use the ferry for freight and if i am not mistaken there is a Casino. In order for a Person to take a car to Puerto rico it has to be completely paid and the person must have the title with him. Also the goverment of Puerto rico ask the driver to see if the Insurance that they have for the car covers into Puerto rico which most dont. They obligate the driver to Purchase a Public responsability insurance this i am not sure but people that have done it they say its about 100 dolars unlimited time.

Allot of dominicans use the ferry to bring merchandize and to purchase in Puerto rico. As you know Puerto rico has the best shooping in the Caribbean because is U.S allot of People like to buy everythin in the P.R and because of weight restrictions and the cost of Air Freight people rather go on the ferry.

Yo ask how much with transportation cost you from Mayaguez to the San Juan area Prepared yourself to pay over 100 dollars for one trip. Please remembre Mayaguez is about almost 3 hours from San Juan and its consider a long trip in P.R. Also be reminded that if you wish to go on a private taxi from Mayaguez to any point in san juan the trip will cost you near 200 dollars!
So your alternative is to get on a publico and it will be unconfortable and some dont have A/C and its going to cost you near 100 dolars. Your best bet is to rent a car and drive to San Juan. Puerto rico has the best roads in the Caribbean there are american style so you will probably wont get lost and if you are driving at night don worry there is plenty of light on roads!!

And at last please remember that hotels in Puerto rico especially in San Juan area are much expensive than any on the D.R. Remember San Juan standard of living and wages are the highest in latin american so hoteliers have to charge more. Also know that San Juan has some beach hotels in the capital so you could enjoy San Juan and have a beach right there. All international and american chains have a presence in San Juan so look at your will.

Also reminding people as from this Wednesday on November 15 all goods and services in Puerto rico will be tax by a (IVU) sales Tax of 7% everything pays including services and products excluding groceries and Medical services and pharmaceutical goods. Please remember this is just like Itebis in the D.R but this still very new for Puerto ricans which it will probably caused confusion and misunderstanding for a while. Puerto rico had a excise tax or arbitrio like we called it here of 6.6% this has been taken off for this new system is about the same $$$ but before merchants pay straight to goverment the shipping of goods when they arrived on Port and that 6.6% will be hidden in the price so now prices will probably look a little less becuase there are not adding the old tax but remember the price will inreased at the register!!!!!
