I just read on another group that the recent closing times for bars has now been amended to; Sunday to Thursday: 2:00 am and Friday, Saturday to 3:00am. I cannot find any confirmation of this but if it is true it should be a compromise which will satisfy most people.

I read it also, but I don't see any authoritive source being cited - I think it's speculation and/or hoping.

Doesn't mean it won't happen; but it may or may not come true, IMHO.

That is part of it.
I remember an article in some tabloid when I was a kid, that read,
"President Nixon dating Minnie Mouse?".
If the title isn't a tip-off about tabloid journalism, then sentences like,
" A government representative has apparently stated"
and
"The government has apparently taken this decision"
will confirm it.

I hope the hours are ammended or even better, that they decide to completely do away with this idea and we can go back to the way things were.

Part of the reason I came here was because the "lack of order" here has a certain appeal to me. My life was so structured before and I felt like I was a robot going through time. Now, I simply feel I have more "room to breathe" than I did back in the USA. Until now.

Having said all that, I was in Boca Chica last week which is place I have only been to 3 or 4 times before. I understand that the "old" Boca Chica was like the wild wild west and that since it was "cleaned up" a year or so ago, it is a different place. Anyway, I drank a bunch of beer and decided I didn't want to drive back to the capital so I got a room for the night. What I saw at midnight scared me. The bars all closed at 12 on the dot and police were all over the street with lights and sirens and bullhorns telling everyone to "get out of the street". By 12:15 there was not a person in the street. Not a motoconcho....nothing. You could hear a pin drop. In reality, there is a curfew imposed there. I don't know if that is happining in other parts of the country but it is an example of the potential and the power they can excercise over you if Lionel or any future predsident sees fit.

For all those who say " I like the new law,I don't drink much anyway. Or I am an early bird anyway so who cares?". Can you all be that narrowminded?

They are randomly stopping cars on independencia in Santo Domingo and searching the occupants now. For all those who don't care about the changes or think they are good, tell me how you feel after your car is pulled over and some illiterate monkey in a uniform is putting his paws all over your girlfriend or wife "looking for drugs" Or going through your pockets, etc.

Welcome to the new Dominican Republic.....Police State.

That must have been a sight to see. I was in Boca Chica three weeks ago and usually left the hotel about 11 pm to hit the bars. I guess I won't be doing that this upcoming trip.

How are things in the Capital? I will be spending a week in Santo Domingo starting the end of this week. I might make a day trip to BC but I will be sure to get out of town by 11pm.

If the prosecutor for Santo Domingo has his way, the hours will be ammended. He wants businesses that serve alcohol closed by 11:00 PM. :(

Meanwhile, prisoners at La Victoria get to go out for a haircut and some drinks with a police escort, and military officers only get "retired" for taking a $600k pesos bribe; but he has nothing to say about that. What a country!

After Hours Club

Heres a oppertunity for private after hours clubs to open..If such a thing is allowed..BYOB.....If you are not selling alcohol and just set ups...Cola and Ice etc..You would not be breaking the law...Charge an admission fee to cover costs..Like they do in NYC...

You would have have major payoffs to make to pull that off.
If they are enforcing closing and evacuation of bars/clubs during this BS curfew, what makes you think they will allow "after hours" clubs to exist?

I am not saying it is impossible, but not without the proper "PAYOLA".

Take a look at post #10. Not only are the bars to be closed at midnight they want you off of the street at midnight. At midnight I will be in my hotel room. I don't believe in taking foolish chances. I will have everything I need in my room before the stroke of 12.

Quite true. People are saying its great because its stopping crime. Well its not its creating a police state and lets see how you like it when your wife is being groped by some illiterate who laughs at you or takes you to jail if you contest. When they take away your rights and you accept it good luck getting them back. Eventually youll just be slaves wondering "How did this happen?"

Wake up!

This law is forcing citizens and tourists to live like prisoners. It's unfair to law abiding people who just want to enjoy themselves and the beauty of the country. Isn't it always the case that everyone suffer for the idiots who can't control their rage and have nothing better to do but cause trouble.

I have a home in the extreme SW of the country...That foolish law doesn't exist there because there are no tourists to rip off... And crime is very low..You are talking about BC...It has never had a good Rep...And the Capital...Hell that police harassment Larry is talking about will die off soon enough..When the DR gets a POLICE STATE reputation they will begin to loose tourism and the DR can't afford to have that happen...We all saw the live video on TV last night of people getting frisked Guns being taken and peoples pockets being searched..But remember the cameras were rolling and they had to make a good show of it for national TV...I'm not saying it isn't like that all night because Larry would know..All I am saying is let's see how long it lasts....When you get back Bigbird post a trip report...

Police state, too funny! Go to the UK or back to the "land of the free" if you want that experience.

Like this is going to last longer than a few weeks. They will slowly change the times etc etc and everything will go back to normal.

This is not the USA or Europe, brute force and knee jerk reactions are the name of the game here. From random searches, preventative custody to bulldozing down family homes, it's how it's done.

What would you do different? After all... using your words, we are dealing with "illiterate monkey's". I wouldn't agree with you on that, but let's hear your solution.

Remember...

Your not in Kansas anymore and you should have left your cultural values at the airport when you arrived.

Welcome to the DR, this is how it's done, this is how it's always been done...

I will let you know what it is like in the DR. I will be staying in the Capital at Hotel Atarazana, Hotel Mercure, and Jaragua. I hope to make a one day trip to BC. It sure will be weird to look outside after midnight to see everything shutdown. Regardless, it won't spoil my trip. I will just get an earlier start in the day.
