Fuel Prices In Domincan Republic
No what i should have said is it is a big diffrence like 30 to 50 peso more a gall when our petrol and diesel is the same price??
The majority of the difference is caused by a lower tax rate on diesel (gasoil). See http://www.seic.gov.do/combust/aviso.htm
In the US, diesel is actually more expensive then gasoline, here its the other way around. Just different taxes I believe.
Do you think there is any coincidence that NYMEX Crude closed at $71.95 today?

Why oil is down...
Chevron has published the finding of a huge new oil field (around 30'000 Millinon barrels) at 8000 meters under sea level in the Mexican golf. The finding is so huge it boast American (US) reserves by 50% (!!). No such fields have been found since the 70's (I believe). There are technical and economic reasons involved too... Only a few years ago it would have been technically impossilbe to drill and extract oil from such deep location (2000 meters sea water + 6000 meters rockbed). Also the higher oil price and the gains oil companies have made in the last years have made possible investments into new technologies and can keep such an enterprise profitable.
I'm not an oil man... this is what I learned from reading a financial news paper yesterday in Switzerland...
So, I guess Mr. Bush can now safely go ahead and take Iran out...

Driving on french fry oil?
It is being done even in the States... a conversion kit to let a diesel engine powered vehicle run on recycled deep frying oil can be found in the States for as low as U$D 800.oo (as seen on TV). Then, one would need some filtering system (available) and tanks and a pump... and last but not least some good connections to some Dominican restaurants or o good dozen of Dominican households (they love frying about everything) to get the oil from.
All joking set aside... I think that individuals or small groups could use this as a viable solution.
WE here (dr1-forumites) could consider to organize such a group... have ONE filter and storage and self service outfit together. Members would chip in for the infrastructure and buy their "diesel" from the pump and get discount points for every gallon of used oil they bring inn... (?).
I'd be all for it... at least to look into it.
At some point, the RD may also need to ask itself on what they can make more money consistently... sugar or ethanol. I don't have the answer to this question.
But all this won't resolve the Republic's dependence on imported oil as long fuel burning power plants remain the prevalent mean of producing electricity.

It could help relieve shortages. But as other projects in the DR "we will wait and see"

As of today, the gallon of premium gasoline will be sold for RD$131.50, and regular for RD$118.20, both were raised RD$3.20 per gallon.
Diesel was raised by RD$2.80 placing its price at RD$96.10.
LPG?s price was raised by RD$1.08, thus making the price of subsidized LPG RD$44.37 and that of not subsidized RD$64.24.

SANTO DOMINGO. - The Industry and Commerce Ministry today posted reductions in the price of fuels starting tomorrow, with premium and regular gasolines dropping 2.90 RD$ and 1.60 respectively.
A gallon of premium gasoline will cost RD$ 130.60, and regular goes to 119.80.
Diesel will drop 20 cents to sell for RD$ 96.70; Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will drop 44 cents, so a gallon of subsidized will sell for RD$ 42.12 and the non- subsidized at RD$64.11.
