My daughter Grace, 16yrs, and myself are coming to live in the Dom
Rep, from Leeds .Yorkshire. England, around mid Sept.... for at least one year.
I will not be seeking work as I am able to finance our stay
independantly.
We both intend to learn the language, Grace at school and myself with
lessons and hopefully voluntary work.
Grace wants to go to a Dom Private school instead of One of the international schools, believing that this experience would help her advance with her learning the language....she was told that the Alic New World is ok....does anyone out there have any experience with this school?
I would really like to talk to expats who have recently
moved over there, maybe people with children of a similar age to Grace.
We have questions to ask, like where did they live when they first
moved, choice of school ect.
We are probably going to book a 4 week holliday in an all inclusive hotel, thus giving us time at a leisurley pace to find a suitable home.
I especially need some advice on who to contact on arrival with regard to help with applying for residency, schools, transport, shopping ect, ect,
What did you do? Where did you get reliable help and advice?

Please write! ....we need your input

Kind regards,
Judith St Claire..Grace

Wow!! First read all the "stickies" on moving to the DR. Rent for at least a year and travel around the island to get a better feel for things. Have you visited the DR before? Canadian Bob.

i went to school in dr when i was a kid and i was not a resident, nor were my parents. not sure if laws have changed, but don't think it's required.

for only a year residency is not needed to apply for school --we have three kids in and basically just do it on a tourist visa. if you can pay for a private school that's really all they care about. what will you do all day while she's in school?

no stress!

While Grace is in school I want to find some voluntary work, preferably with children, but anywhere I am needed would be ok as I want to learn the language.
I understand that Spanish lessons are very reasonably priced.... I'll do the gym.. yoga.., I dance a lot over here, Ceroc...so lessons in Salsa will be on the adjenda....
I don't need to work.......I've had stress for 17 years....I consider myself very lucky to be in the position I'm now in where I do not need to work.....after we have "lived the life" as you all put it we will reconsider our position and maybe buy something....I'm not in a rush...so we will see what unfolds in our new life.........
I am seriously considering opting out of driving when I am living over there.....the roads are naff...drivers don't observe the rules of driving.....If I NEED a car for anything I will just hire one for a couple of days......what do you think?
Anyway I am looking forward, (if with a certain amount of trepidation) to moving out....I hope that some of you will be open to meeting up....I will contact you when we arrive sometime next month..
By the way I was put in touch with a couple of ladies from the Netherlands who together run a buisness, one in property and the other specialises in helping people with all their relocating ....stuff!....she charges $100 per day......what do you think....could I get by without this service .....or do you recommend I take it up????......as a single woman with a teenage daughter I am rather vunerable aren't I?? I would welcome your opinions.......
Please reply.....THANKS
Judith and Grace x

Judith, baby Grace, etc...,

If you are only coming for a year, residency is not necessary.

I recommend renting here for a long time before considering buying something. Renting on the North Coast is fairly expensive as compared to the rest of the country but I believe you said you wanted to live in Puerto Plata (?)...where rents are more reasonable than Sosua, Caberete, etc. Your idea of staying in an AI for a month while you look around for a rental is a good one.

You said you dont think you will need a car? You will, especially if you are living on the North Coast, Taxis are very expensive up there (especially for someone like you who doesn't speak Spanish) and public transportation would be an enormous step down from what I imagine you are used to. Also, this is a beautiful big country and you need a car to see it. If you are going to be here a year, you will be cheating yourself if you dont do some exploring.

I suggest you do a lot of due diligence on here as this board is a wealth of information and full of good people, many who have been living here for years. I also suggest that you make as many good contacts as you can on here before you arrive. This will make your transition much easier.

Lastly, I suggest popping into Rockys bar in Sosua for a drink after you arrive and settle in. It is a very popular gathering place for many North Coast expats, many of whom post on here.

Good luck and hopefully we will cross paths after you arrive. I live in Santo Domingo but travel up to Sosua fairly often.
