I just looked at an Americana ad for TV's and was curious how they compared to US online prices. I managed to find the same models online so the price comparison should be reasonably accurate.

The only thing I don't know about the Americana TV's is if they are refurbished models. It's not uncommon here to find refurbished offered as new and they don't have to publish the fact. If it looks new, Dominicans assume it's new.

Toshiba 42" Plasma - RD$129,790 (US$3,933) - Online US$1,600
Toshiba 23" LCD - RD$48,279 (US$1,463) - Online US$700
Haier 26" LCD - RD$46,699 (US$1,415) - Online US$720
Audiovox Kitchen - RD$23,785 (US$720) - Online US$350

Double the price + :)

Rob,
Do what I did and buy a projection TV.

Mine is a NEC HT410 DLP projector. Doesn't look as good as a HD TV, I'll admit, but it's a great 10' screen, none the less.

It was 500 bucks..

You can buy the latest technology Projectors with 2000 lumens of light at Krater AV, behind Diamond Mall.

Pretty much State of the art for 1200 bucks..

I'm not looking, I'm just making people aware of the price difference.
If you have any hard samples relating to TV and pricing, please post.

Electronics are extremely more expensive in the DR than the US. Not that this is something strange as it all has to be imported. The greatest difference is in slightly older electronics where in the US people pay a premium when something is BRAND new and after a short while you can buy the same item used or refurbed for a lot less. In the DR there still sold at a premium.

This makes electronics the perfect items to bring in with you and recoup money or they serve as the best gifts since the recipiant would pay so much more for the same item locally.

If you plan on selling stuff there good luck. you have to get these items through customs (the easy part). Then find someone who has money to buy them (the hard part).

If you analyze the cost difference of buying a Plasma or LCD in the US and then the cost of shipping it and then the possible cost of repair in case of future damage, should be the basis of how much you could save buying the TV abroad. Because if shipping and repair, evens out the cost in comparison to Americana, then it won't be worth the hassle. Also, I would not be surprised if over half the electronics in the DR are refurbished items, sold as new. I would recommend, writing down the serial number and googling the info for possible recalls or manufactorers defects.

Does the DR broadcast in HDTV? If not, a plain tube tv is suffice.

HD doesn't matter if there's no HD signal. I have a projector TV on a 16' screen in my bar. $1200 for a 2000 lumen unit is a good buy, but the cost of replacement bulbs can be astronomical. Mine cost $450, and are ~supposedly~ good for 2000 hours. I run a small fan onto the unit to keep it cooler, supposedly that increases the life of the bulb.

The owner of Americana supposedly has a mansion in arroho hondo with 3000 square meters (not ft !) construction and 12 household employees to keep the castle in shape... stuff needs to be paid for :)

Not made up, my dominican neighbor always drives his canadian exchange students there to show them the DR rich/poor contrast.

Toshiba 42" plasma model 42HP86 is $1899.99 in my store today was $2499.99 only one week ago.
There has been major price moves in our industry for the last week or so,on all brands.
