Hi,

does anybody know the real story behind this?

Diario Libre Online

Were the cybercafes fronts for something else? Were they real cybercafes raided just to prove a point?

What was the extent of the damage of the seizures? The consequences for the owners?

It is appalling to me that somebody owning a cybercafe is supposed to monitor all of their customers all the time, and even worse, be legally responsible for the pages they view...

This is the typical ignorant show of force that's common here.
Disengage brain, take action, sort the inevitable mess out later.

It's easier to seize all the equipment than find a solution or reason.
Plus you can make a few $$$ selling off the equipment to your uncle or cousin ;)

Remember, most of the people that are enforcing the law and taking the action against the cyber cafes are pretty ignorant when it comes to computers. This is why they do what they do and the way they do it.

Do not expect to see first world tactics and investigation techniques applied here, it's just not going to happen.

Anyway.. give it a week or so and they will be back open, kids will be downloading porn like they do all around the world and Miguel the cousin will be happy with his new spyware and virus infested computer.

I dunno. Kiddie porn and child prostitution? Doesn't sound very savory to me.

They busted a brothel, so what? The city is full of brothels, just like London, New York, Miami, Sydney, Rio, etc etc. It's not unique to the DR. Girls are not forced to work in brothels here, it's a very free and transient business. Have you been to Sosua lately?
Also read - http://www.dr1.com/articles/prostitution.shtml

The charge was "Illegal Transport of Migrants and the Prostitution of People", they didn't find any minors. It's just smoke and mirrors, anyone that lives here knows that. I guess someone moved in on a relatives turf?

They busted an Internet cafe for what a client allegedly did. Instead of ruining the life of the owner, why not go after the person that committed the actual crime. Forget that, that takes investigative work, it's easier to shut the place down and look good in the press. It's completely ridiculous to think that cyber cafe owners have to police what their clients look at. They can't even keep spyware or viruses off their machines. See a recent news story on that.

It's just like the closing of the Praia, another knee jerk reaction.
Closed due to discrimination, give me a break. Not letting people in at the door of clubs happens all over the world, it's an "art" in New York, Miami and London. I think the words "private party" were invented in New York :) You see people get discriminated against everyday here, it's part of the culture, from the Haitian beggar renting kids to make money to the maid being abused for staining the clothes with "Cloro". Let's also not forget "oye, negro", "mira gordita" etc etc. The list goes on and on...

But hey.. I love living here and I love the discrimination, it's just another ingredient that makes this place a paradise for some of us :)

I agree 100% with Robert. The fact remains though that the vast majority of people who read the headline or article about a brothel being shut down and the internet cafe having it's equipment seized actually think thats a sign things are going in the right direction...especially when the word "jovenes" is erroneously thrown in giving the false impression that children were working there. Like Robert said, it's all "smoke and mirrors" and the brothel was probably raided because they moved in on someone elses turf.

Actually if you read the article carefully, it is full of evasive language and basically says next to nothing. Very bad reporting and badly written. First of all, it states quite clearly that the brothel in question had "jovenes de entre 18 y 23 años" -- so that is not the same thing as prostituting minors, as is later alleged: "Supuestamente se dedicaba a reclutar menores para explotarlos sexualmente." At least the writer took the precaution of writing "supuestamente." And the cyber café part is even weirder: one guy downloads some kiddie porn (pretty dumb anyway in a public internet café), and the owner of the establishment is held responsible, plus an "allanamiento" of 14 establishments -- but it could be that the law here referred to (Ley 136-03) is written up in such a manner as to hold the owners responsible, much as in the States a barowner is responsible if a drunk leaves his bar and is involved later in an accident. Anyway, most of the porn being viewed at these places is downloaded by horny teenagers, and it is silly to react in this manner.
