Okaay, I just found out my mom booked us (me and her) a trip to Punta Cana. From Dec 20-30th. Pretty excited, but just a few questions wondering if anyone has any insight.

1. Is December a pretty quiet time? Or are there a good amount of tourists?
2. Weather? Is it colder with rain and clouds or no?
3. Reviews sayd Secrets Excellence (which is kind of off 'the strip') is only recommended for couples, will me and my mom be disgusted by all the love birds? ((I just turned legal and shes a few from 50))
4. I want to jump off water falls! and the only place I came up with was Damajagua Falls. I think its pretty far away, but Im not sure HOW far away. Are there are tours from PC to there? Or if there is another place I can do it at.
5. Any good tours that we shouldn't miss out on (that doesn't require too much athletic effort!)

Any other good information or suggestions would be apperciated.

THanks

Secrets

Hi! You will love Secrets! My husband worked there for two and a half years as a bar tender: beach bar, showtime bar, and the disco. I used to vacation close to Secrets so we could be together, but on a nightly basis I would taxi to his resort and be with him as he worked. I would go to the casino, then watch the show, and then go to the disco.

The resort is so beautiful and romantic. Yes you will see lots of couples but I would not let that bother you because it is a 5 star hotel all the way. It is definatly a more 'high class' resort and you will see a lot of people dressed up in their best evening wear, therefore take some nice clothes. The best thing about Secrets is that it is adult geared. The shows are a little more revealing and you don't have kids screaming all day long! I would say the majority of people are from the US and have always been very friendly. I am sure it helps when you drink premium brands of alcohol!

I usually vacation in Oct. - Nov. which is usually a more slow time. Secrets always had lots of people there. The ages I would assume were between 25-55, but definatly mature and most in 30's and 40's.

The beach is clean but is not the best part of Dominican beaches, the water is a little rough. There are lots of hammocks too. My husband and I had some pictures done from the Secrets photographer and he did an excellent job on the beach. Highly recommended! Out of 36 black and whites, I think I did not like 5.

Like I said, I would only be there in the evening for a few hours, but have always dreamed of being a vacationer there. Your vacation is what you make it: if you want to relax...relax, if you want to party...party!

It is very nice that your mom is taking you to one of the best resorts in the DR: 5 star, adults only.

is this your first trip to the DR ?

Sounds like you have a great mom. I am trying to get my daughters to go with me there, as I am in love with the beauty, the people and the culture of this wonderful Island. I have been there 4 times since this past Feb.
(2006) so that says it all. Just cant seem to find a time that they both can go together. Sounds like you and your mom are very close. That is very special, and a trip like this will even mean more because of your already solid bond.
What ever you do, dont limit yourselves by isolating yourself at the AI, it is very easy to do, everything is at your finger tips. But there is so much to see and do there. Just be careful. Alot of the adventurous outtings are not governed by the same safty rules as in other countries. Talk to the Hotels manager, I am sure he can point you in the right direction, talk to other guests, and do not, I repeat DO NOT attempt to drive while in the DR. Do not rent a car and take a trip out on your own. It is a real challenge to drive there. It is probably more dangerous than jumping off a waterfall. I did it once, liked it, but than of course I have been driving for many years, and was with someone who lived there to guide me as to the CRAZY rules of the road. Have the hotel staff at the front desk arrange for a taxi driver for you that speaks English. You will enjoy your trip out of the reosrt if you can communicate with your driver. Most drivers that the hotel sets you up with are good and safe, and very helpful. Remember to tip, but dont go crazy. Remember these people make there living off of tips, but if you tip in US consider the exchange rate. Us currency is the $ of choice. And is right up there next to the Euro Dollar. And remember take cash with you, the ATMs are not reliable, often are empty, and only pay out in pesos. Most hotels do not offer much in the way of money transaction, or exchanges. Do your research ahead of time.

As you already know about this sight, ask away. And what ever you do, if you havent already, please read the section about the Sankie Epidemic down there. I am refering to the section on Sankie 101. Most of the AI's in Punta Cana have a great animation staff, you will see them by the pool and out at
the beach. Participating in the evenings entertainment prior to the extra ciricular activities these casanovas are after when they are off the clock at about 10:30 or 11:00 pm. They are charming and suave, and can make you a victim of their "game" before you even realise it, or know what hit you. Please take my advise, and remember it is just my advise. Form your own opinion after reading, and posting questions as you wish on the Sankie section. It will save you much grief later on, and will make your trip more enjoyable. As you read the postings, remember they are not BS, they are true, as far fetched as they may seem. and all this information will be helpful, as it may have a bearing on certain situaitions that both you and your mom would probably prefer to avoid. Other wise, have a wonderful vacation. Its one of the most beautiful places I have ever traveled to.

If you want to go to a great water fall, have you ever been to Jamaica ? Dunns River Falls is spectacular. Cant really do alot of jumping, but where you can jump is amazing, and has a breath taking view from mid point up. There are also many wonderful water falls in USA, at Yellowston National Park, Northern Michigan, so many I cant even name them all, but I guarantee they are all spectactular. I have seen many 1st hand, and I am not sure I would want to jump off one, but they are amazing to look at. Enjoy, Enjoy ! Danceaway

what brought you here ?

Seems you are a newbie, am I correct in saying that ? If So WELCOME ! and what brought you here ? Did someone tell you about this sight ? did you just come across it by accident ? how, and why. And it is probably the best thing that you have done for you and your mom before you take your trip. Smart Gal ! Mom must have raised you RIGHT ! And just keep in mind that some of the answers you might get back on the Sankie board might seem a little harsh, just ignor it. Ask what you want to. Its your life, and you are free to make your own choices. Filter out the useless, and retain what seems to be good honest helpful answers. Some of the "posters " are just a little "nasty" at times. Dont let them offend you, I am sure their intentions are good, they just go about it in a very "unique " way at times. Take care, Danceaway

Jessica,

No waterfalls. Since Secrets has waves you can have the dive boat guys pull you through the surf and wave jump.

We will be back for trip #7 to Secrets the same time as you and your mother. On all of our trips we have talked with mom and daughter guests or groups of just females out on vacation. Yes Secrets does have a bunch of romance in the air. It also is just elegant.

Sankies= We arrive on the 21st and leave on the 1st so if you want the 3 main sankies pointed out the Mrs. and I will show you.

We have several albums posted of Secrets:

amazing pictures

I think you have the most wondeful album of pictures I have seen yet Drugdog. (Kevin) Makes me want to take another trip. I think you should get a commission for selling me on Secrets. But at last, my poor heart is breaking, you can run, but you can not hide, sankies lurking everywhere. even at such a fantastic resort as this. But trust me...the management does not encourage this behavior, nor condone it, never get away from that sankie game. And thanks for offering to point out who to keep your eye on or who to stay away from to Jessica and her mom. If more people would just help another out with this kind of information than this "game" will dry up and go back to where it first reared its ugly head. No cash, no takers, no game, NO SANKIES. Education is bliss ! Knowledge is a God Sent !
But keep this in mind, Jessica and Mom, you will have the perfect vacation, rain or shine, it doesnt matter. a resort like this offers so many things to do, you wont even notice if it does rain. Just do your homework, and review other alums on line from other travelers to Secrets Punta Cana. You will be counting the days till you go. And like me, you will be counting the days till you can go again. You will even find yourself going on a whim. There are always great 'get aways' for a reasonable price in the Sunday papers. or better yet, look on line, many great sights ! but, one trip at a time. I sometimes get a little carried away

I am very surprised at all the feedback so quickly. Its rather nice. Usually before vacations, Ill post and won't get at least one reply till a week later, so all this information is much apperciated. I'm a little upset about the waterfall thing, I've always wanted to do that. Me and Mom try to travel at least once a year (yes, Ive been to Dunn River Falls), and waterfall jumping is something that I've always really wanted to do. I guess I can wait for somewhere else!
Yes, this is my first time to DR, Mom usually doesn't want to venture outside of Mexico unless it's a cruise but we got a REAL good deal on secrets. Plus our travel agent just got back from there, so she talked Mom into it. Itwas either me and her go Christmas or I go somewhere for College Spring Break, but Im not really into the whole 'get wasted for 7 days straight and not take anything away from a beautiful country but a hangover' kinda thing. I would much rather see the acutal country, the culture, and I gues in DR's case--the jungles! But Mom isn't really into that. Kind of more paranoid of something happening. But im talking her into at least one excursion. So anyways, yeah, i found this board by just searching different things to do in Punta Cana. We always try to become familiar with a place before we go. Regarding Secrets, I didnt doubt it would be anything short of amazing, just wondering if its gonna be THAT bad, surrounded by couples. Either way, pool and sun is enough for me so I really don't care that much.
Thank you for the information about the Sankies. My mom freaks out about that kind of stuff, so it's good to be aware before hand! Ill have to send her this thread so she can freak out early, rather than down there! Im sure she would really like to know who to stay away from, so pointing them out would probably be good. I read a little thread about Sankies somewhere else, but Ill have to check out the real deal.

Thanks so much for all the information, this trip is the only thing gettting me through my first semester at college!!

OKay I read parts 1 2 and 3 of the Sankie thing.
I am finding it really extreme.
It boggles my mind that people actually do fall for stuff like this. Are they like really amazing guys or something, because when I think of hotel workers, all I picture is poor mexicans who hardly speak english and just try to make a few extra pesos or something. I would be totally creeped out if some guy started talking my ear off. This one guy at Senor Frogs in Ixtapa kind of did that, but I just laughed in his face because thats gross and out of the question. That stuff just makes me feel like hes about to rape me or something. I mean its fun to play around but I wouldnt actually listen to a word they say or give them the time of day.
I guess well have to see and keep our eyes open.
Thanks.

Danceaway. Thanks for the comments. Have 3 other trips to Secrets to post but just never seem to get around to it.

1. Is December a pretty quiet time? Or are there a good amount of tourists?
This will be our 3rd Christmas and New Years stay. The resort was packed the 2 prior trips. With Secrets leaving on the 1st of Jan. it might not be as crowded.

2. Weather? Is it colder with rain and clouds or no?
Weather will be sunny and hot during the daytime. Evening will be a touch cooler. Some women wear wraps at night. Depends on the breeze.

3. Reviews sayd Secrets Excellence (which is kind of off 'the strip') is only recommended for couples, will me and my mom be disgusted by all the love birds? ((I just turned legal and shes a few from 50))
Here is a link to a lady that travels with her mother a couple of times a year. She has detailed reviews and thoughts. There is also a board to ask questions. Chris-n-Cheryl Home Page
You have nothing to worry about. If you like to dance and play games in and out of the water the female entertainment staff will take you under their wings. Just hope you have the energy to keep up with them.

4. I want to jump off water falls! and the only place I came up with was Damajagua Falls. I think its pretty far away, but Im not sure HOW far away. Are there are tours from PC to there? Or if there is another place I can do it at.
Covered most of the waterfall issue.

5. Any good tours that we shouldn't miss out on (that doesn't require too much athletic effort!)
Several tours. First is you want to do the free horseback ride sign up the day you check in. After getting your room and luggage go to the concierge desk and sign up. It fills up fast and its free and a blast.
Second, we tell everyone that has never been to the DR to check out the Outback Safari. It is all day but you will go out in the country and see things that you would never see inside the resort.
Third, the resort has its own dunebuggy tour. They are next to the SCUBA hut. It is a half day tour and is fun. We know the tour owners and they are both very nice people. Will take you out into the country and explain the agriculture and small towns in the area.

We leave the resort almost every other day. Go to Higuey to shop and see friends. Go into Bavaro to shop and see the sights. This trip Marco the General Manager is taking us down to Cap Cana to see the construction of the new Secrets being built. We also go into a local disco at least once and party with the management team at Secrets. If you and your mother want to tag along on any of the trips you are more than welcome.

Sankies: They are pretty tame at Secrets. None live in the area so it makes it hard for them to play the game. If you looked at our pictures you will see a couple of the guys we called sankies. They are more players than real sankies. Flirt and dance is the game they are best at.

When you walk in the front walkway to check in and the staff says "Welcome Home" you will realize that you are in for a great vacation.

Smart Gal !

Jessica, sounds like you are one smart gal ! I am glad to hear that you usually try to learn about the places you will be traveling. It makes the trip that much better. And I am so happy that Secrets is the kind of place that the sankies only do the dance thing...it sounds like the kind of place that will be fun and exciting in a very positive way. I am so pleased that you took my advise and read up about the Sankies. Most people in the DR are kind ,friendly, generous, and want to share the history and the culture of their wonderful island with everyone they meet. I am also glad to hear that you will have a friendly face down there while you are there to "advise" you and mom. Its always nice to know that people still care and are willing to look out for their fellow man, woman and child....gives me a renewed faith in people as a whole. And good luck with college. Please PM me and tell me where you go and what you are studing, if you want to. Just interested. And what ever you do take lots of pictures, and post them. Everyone here always likes to see pictures of all the fun. Keep us posted. I will look forward to seeing the pictures, and hearing about your vacation. Danceaway

trip/hotel...very much below expectations.

i would never go back to that resort.

also, very rude people and other guests.
