I'm not current on the latest info, but it used to be that you had to dial 880 for 800 numbers, and they were not toll free, in fact, they charged you the normal long distance rate.
Perhaps, someone has some updates on that info.

800 numbers

We have never been able to access any 800 numbers to the USA.
Some of the companies will provide you with international accsess numbers
other than 800.

I would believe that you can dial "0" and they will give you the information you need.

Yes it is possible to call "800" numbers to Canada and the U.S., but as Rocky noted, you do not dial the 800, you dial another number which the operators should be able to tell you. You will get a message telling you that there is a fixed rate per minute on the calls.

If you dial the number as an "800" number, you use to get a message, telling you the correct number to replace the "800" with.

Just simply call the operator and ask.....

If you Dial the 1-800 number you are calling a maching will tell you wich prefix you will need to dial instead of 1-800 number and cost per minute that is 10.00 pesos plus tax unless the company you are calling has some deal with local operator to go through the call like Delta Airlines and other companies where the 1-800 number is free from DR.

800 #'s

while on my last trip to the DR I was able to dial any 800, or any toll free number, that I wanted to, but ended up with an astonomical cell phone bill. so check with your carrier first. Lesson learned !

Do you mean that it is posible to call some 1-800 toll free numbers?
If so, how do we find out which ones?

IF your dial 1-800-221-1212 from a fixed line and meke a connection is free, If not you will hear a machine that will tell you that you have to change 1-800 for 1-880 and the cost will be 10.00 pesos plus taxes, if the number is 1-866 the machine will tell you what prefix is for 1-866 numbers and same 10.00 pesos plus taxes will be charge per minute.

In that case the cost of the call will be twice calling to 1-800 number from here, so will be better then to call to a normal number
